Disney Sports Complex to Become ESPN-Branded Immersive Sports Venue Leading amateur and professional sports facility to become ESPN branded; signature ESPN elements to be featured; detailed development plans still in the works Aligning the world's No. 1 family vacation destination with the worldwide leader in sports, Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN are joining forces to re-brand Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex with the ESPN brand, creating an entertaining and immersive experience for the nearly 2 million athletes, coaches and spectators who come through the Disney sports complex each year. Plans for the re-branding initiative -- which was announced today during the ESPN upfront presentation to advertisers and sponsors -- are still in the development stage, but initial concepts involve renaming the sports complex and incorporating the signature elements of ESPN throughout the 220-acre facility, which is a leading venue for amateur and professional sports in the country. The project aims to enhance the experience of both athletes and spectators by connecting them to their favorite ESPN programs, personalities and elements. It also will provide advertisers new sponsorship opportunities at the grass roots level. "This is a natural and exciting pairing of two powerful brands to create a one-of-a-kind, immersive sports venue that will enable athletes, coaches and guests to experience sports in a whole new way," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts. "This project builds on our collaborative successes and positions us to explore more opportunities with ESPN to create new experiences for guests at Walt Disney World Resort." "Our involvement in the Disney sports complex will provide greater opportunities for us to connect directly with athletes, coaches and fans in a highly immersive way," said George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN Inc. and ABC Sports, and co-chairman of Disney Media Networks. "Our involvement also provides us with a unique and exciting new media platform that will enable our advertisers and sponsors to reach new customers and bring their products and services to life.'' The re-branding of the Disney sports complex is the latest initiative in the growing sports business at Walt Disney World Resort. In December, the sports complex debuted additional outdoor playing fields for football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey competitions. And this summer the sports complex will open Jostens Center, a new state-of-the-art field house that will allow Disney to accommodate twice as many indoor sports events each year. Additional expansion plans are being explored. The Disney sports complex annually hosts more than 180 events in 50 different sports involving athletes from more than 70 countries. Among those events are the Atlanta Braves spring training season, a Tampa Bay Rays regular-season series, the Major League Baseball Draft, the NBA Pre-Draft Camp, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp, Chelsea Football Club events, the Pop Warner Super Bowl, AAU National Championships, Varsity All-Star Cheerleading competitions, USSSA events and the Walt Disney World Marathon, one of the top marathons in the nation. ESPN televised 20 sporting events from the complex in the last year. Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN also annually work together to host the popular ESPN The Weekend event at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Three Atlanta Braves Games Rank Among All-Time Best Spring Training Crowds in 11-Year History at Disney Record Single-Game Crowd Boosts 2008 Braves Attendance to Third-Highest at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (March 27, 2008) -- The Atlanta Braves, who wrapped up their 2008 Major League Baseball Spring Training season today, posted three of their all-time highest crowds at the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, pushing their overall attendance to the third-highest mark in 11 years. The Braves drew 138,811 during 16 games at Champion Stadium at Disney - a total that is expected to rank second only to the New York Yankees among the 18 Major League Baseball teams who train in Florida as part of the Grapefruit League. Final numbers are expected to be reported next week. The Braves played an exhibition game against the University of Georgia along with 15 home games against MLB opponents in 2008, averaging 8,675 fans per game. They finished with a 10-5-1 record at home and attracted three crowds that ranked among the top 15 all-time at Disney for spring training, including the top all-time crowd of 11,606 for the Detroit Tigers game March 20. The other top crowds were the March 9 contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, which drew the 10th largest crowd (11,259), and the New York Mets game, which drew the 13th best crowd (11,082) on March 27. The 2008 schedule included no rainouts. Disney's Wide World of Sports christened the newly named Champion Stadium before a nationally televised audience Feb. 29 on ESPN. The celebration began with a pre-game ceremony punctuated by fireworks and a lavish signage unveil, before capping off the day with a 10-3 win by the Braves over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The complex has been the Braves' permanent spring training home since 1998. Atlanta Braves Champion Stadium Spring Training Attendance at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex:

Brazilian Adriano Bastos Wins Disney Marathon for the Fifth Time Newcomer Melanie Peters of Florida Claims Women's Title to Join 'Familiar Faces' In the Winner's Circle The winner's circle was crowded with familiar faces at the 15th annual Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend as Brazilian Adriano Bastos claimed his fifth Disney trophy Sunday, climaxing two days of events during which two other former champions also added another Disney title to their resumes. They were joined by Disney newcomer Melanie Peters of St. Petersburg who claimed the women's title in just her second marathon ever. More than 40,000 runners were entered in a variety of Disney Marathon Weekend events, including 18,000 in the marathon and 16,500 in the half marathon. The 29-year-old Bastos, from Sao Paulo, broke the tape in 2:20:58, more than 14 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, John Garton of Voorhees, N.J. The victory, Bastos' fourth straight at Walt Disney World Resort, allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief. "Every year I win, it builds the pressure to come back and win the following year," he said. And Bastos admitted he is already thinking about "next year" and a goal not just to win but to improve on his best-ever Disney time -- a 2:18:33 he posted in 2003. He attributed Sunday's performance -- the 26th-best ever in the Disney Marathon but Bastos' slowest ever at Disney -- to the fact that he was not fully recovered from a late-fall marathon in Brazil. Other "familiar faces" in the Disney winner's circle were elite wheelchair racer Saul Mendoza of Wimberley, Texas, and half-marathoner Kim Pawelek of Jacksonville, Fla. Mendoza returned to the Disney Marathon for the first time in four years and picked up right where he left off in 2004 -- cruising into the winner's circle. For Mendoza, a native of Mexico who was honored as his country's Athlete of the Century for the 20th century, Sunday's win was his eighth at Walt Disney World Resort. In the half marathon on Saturday, Pawelek raced to her fourth Disney women's title. Her 1:18:07 earned the 33-year-old runner a 42-second victory over Yolanda Flamino of Rochester, Mich. (1:18:49). Pawelek's time was the ninth best in event's history. She also owns the second, fourth and 10th-best times. Peters, a 24-year-old Michigan native who migrated to Florida as a student at the University of Miami, won the women's marathon crown with a time of 2:47:32. That put her nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Sonja Friend-Uhl of West Palm Beach (2:49:27). Christa Benton of St. Petersburg finished third to complete a Florida sweep. Three members of the "Hansons-Brooks" distance running team from Rochester, Mich., took the first three spots in the half marathon men's division. Chad Johnson (1:06:53), C. Fred Joslyn (1:06:54) and Patrick Rizzo (1:07:05) posted the fourth-through-sixth-fastest times ever at Disney. Registration for the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend opens Jan. 14, 2008, at 12 p.m. ET at www.disneyworldmarathon.com. (Source: Press Release)

"The Richard Petty Driving Experience at Walt Disney World Speedway offers guests the ultimate racing souvenir that doubles as gear-spinning home décor -- used tires. After experiencing the ride of a lifetime in an authentic stock car at the one-mile Walt Disney World Speedway, guests can purchase the same Goodyear Racing Eagles that are used on the 630-horsepower machines. The tires are used for approximately 100 laps around the speedway before they are changed. Once the tires are removed from the cars, they are stacked in the showroom store where guests can purchase them for $5 or less. Tires must be purchased at the speedway; no shipping is available... a new, full set of Goodyear Racing Eagles with rims costs race teams between $500 and $1,200... Beth, our travel agent, writes about fun Disney stuff: "You can add any of four Richard Petty Driving Experiences to your Disney Travel Company Package. The first gets you three laps around the track as a passenger (professional driver behind the wheel). It's $99 + tax. The second option is 3 laps with YOU as the driver. (The pro goes along for the ride.) It's $349 + tax. Option three is 18 laps with you as the driver (and the pro along). You do 8 laps, take a break, and then do 10 laps. The break time is used to asses your skills and tell you how to improve. The cost is $699 + tax. The final option is the ultimate for all you NASCAR wannabees: 30 laps, done in three 10-lap sessions with a break in between each. The pro is still along as your "co-pilot," but you're in total control. You'll be $1199 + tax poorer, but have the thrill of a lifetime under your belt. Maybe you'd prefer to watch the Atlanta Braves do laps around the bases, Spring training style. Not a problem! You can add game tickets to any package from March 3 - April 1. There's a game roughly every other day. Tickets are roughly $20, depending on what section you pick. Then come back in the summer to watch the champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers get ready for a new season."

We are staying at Kissimmee therefore cannot use guest privilege at Disney... we are looking at the possibility to play... on some of Disney's golf courses......but wow... it is very expensive. They have something called 'twilight time' at a reasonable price.... are there other discounts or specials for nonresidents at Disney.
