Guests Find Out of This World Dining Experience At Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios "Terrifying Plants" stalk the planet and "Invaders" touch down from another dimension at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disneys Hollywood Studios, featuring favorite science fiction and monster flicks teamed with the finest drive-in food known to earthlings and aliens alike. The Setting: On a replica of a studios soundstage, the 250-seat restaurant re-creates a 1950s drive-in theater smack in the middle of Hollywood Hills without the smog. Diners are seated in re-creations of flashy, chrome-gilded cars of old, and fiber-optic stars twinkle overhead in the night sky as all ears tune in to real drive-in speakers mounted next to each car. All cars are facing the big screen, but guests cant resist checking out the wheels next door. The '50s era automobiles, complete with fins and whitewalls, are painted in a rainbow of colors ranging from fire-engine red and emerald green to ice blue and metallic lavender. The Menu: Carhops decked out in campy versions of a '50s drive-in costume take guests orders from a menu thats out of this world. The food arrives from the drive-ins "Snack Bar." "Main Features" range from smoked baby back ribs to shrimp penne pasta. No earthling could resist the lineup of desserts for all tastes, like the warm apple and pecan crisp or hot fudge sundae. The Show: The screen comes to life with trailers from "Cat Women of the Moon," "Invasion of the Saucermen" and more. The Sci-Fi Dine-Ins film is a 45-minute compilation of the best (and worst!) of the science fiction trailers and cartoons, including segments from "It Conquered the World," "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster," "The Amazing Colossal Man" and "Missile to the Moon." David Cook, youve just been named the new American Idol, what are you going to do next? Im going to Disney World! LOS ANGELES -- To celebrate "The American Idol Experience" attraction coming to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, David Cook shouted the famous words "I'm Going to Disney World!" Wednesday night, May 21, after being crowned the newest "American Idol" in the popular show's star-studded season finale in Los Angeles. Camera crews captured Cook's pronouncement on the Nokia Theatre stage just moments after "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest announced his name to millions of viewers watching worldwide. Later that night, Cook was featured in the newest "I'm Going to Disney World!" commercial that aired only hours after the finale. Starring in a role usually occupied by sports stars -- such as Super Bowl or World Series champs -- Cook is the first singer to ever star in the Disney commercial. Cook's role in the "I'm Going to Disney World" ad is all in celebration of the new "American Idol" attraction that will open at Walt Disney World in Florida in January 2009. Currently under construction at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, it's the first attraction anywhere in the world based on the popular television series, through an agreement with FremantleMedia Enterprises and 19 Entertainment. When complete, Disney guests will be able to experience the thrill of an interactive attraction amidst all the glitz and glamour of the "American Idol" television show. By starring in the commercial, Cook joins a line up of superstar professional athletes from the fields of football, basketball, and baseball, who have shouted the famous line during the past 20+ years, "I'm Going to Disney World!" Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian Opening Soon at Disneys Hollywood Studios Guests Experience a Whole New Journey Into the World of Narnia... This summer, some of the characters from C.S. Lewis's timeless fantasy The Chronicles of Narnia come to life at Walt Disney World in Florida. Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian, an all-new soundstage attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios, offers an in-depth and unique look into the making of "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" (released in theaters May 16 by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media Films). The journey begins at the queue where guests can test their knowledge of the Narnia stories. Next, guests will have an option of participating in a meet and greet with Prince Caspian himself against a backdrop of the "Dancing Lawn," the location where the Narnians first confront Prince Caspian in the movie. Fans who can't wait to be transported will have the option to head directly into the new movie attraction Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian. The attraction opens with a narration from the film's director, Andrew Adamson, who explains the behind-the-scenes footage of the making of "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian." Guests then pass through an archway carved into stone that reveals an underground vault which holds the stone table where, in the first movie, Aslan sacrificed himself. "Guests and fans alike will be drawn into a different world as they enter the Narnia portal," says Dave Hoffman, art director for Walt Disney Imagineering. "By using audio and visual effects with multiple surround screens, we immerse guests into The Chronicles of Narnia like never before." In addition to the immersive, behind-the-scenes experience, guests can view authentic props from the movie set and costumes worn by the actors and actresses in the film. Even the structure of "Aslan's How," which is visible as guests "cross over" into Narnia, was cast from the same molds as the one used in the actual film. The attraction itself will open in early summer but the meet and greet experience with Prince Caspian is currently open for guests to enjoy. Guests will find it located at Soundstage 4, between Walt Disney: One Man's Dream and Toy Story Mania!, at Disney's Hollywood Studios. (Source: Press Release, 05/14/08)
"Disney Hollywood Studios held a media preview day Wednesday for their latest
attraction, Toy Story Midway Mania.
"The Toy Story Mania attraction preview is open to annual pass holders
of Walt Disney World."
Toy Story Mania! Goes into Fourth Dimension to Continue Disney Parks Tradition of Immersing Guests in the Show LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- When Walt Disney World guests "shrink" to the size of the toys they play with at home (or remember from their childhood) and become the star performers in the midway-game world of Toy Story Mania! at Disney's Hollywood Studios, they are experiencing the essence of Disney Parks: engagement in such an immersive and interactive way that guests become part of the show. Every day, Disney cast members invite guests to play special roles in entertainment throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Other immersive experiences include such roles as starring in a parade down Main Street, U.S.A., learning dance moves from the Disney Channel sensation "High School Musical 2," dueling with Darth Vader and many more. "These experiences transport our guests deep into the magical realms of what Disney parks are all about," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "Rather than imagine being in a Disney parade or what it's like to sail with Captain Jack Sparrow, these transformational experiences put our guests right in the heart of their dreams." It's a Disney tradition that goes back to the very beginning of Disney Parks -- the opening of Disneyland in 1955 -- and is a consideration every time the famed Disney Imagineers huddle to fathom new magic. In the latest immersive-entertainment experience, Toy Story Mania! guests are transported into a 4-D world where they compete in virtual midway-style games hosted by characters from the Disney-Pixar films "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," including Woody, Hamm and Rex. Donning 3-D glasses and using spring-action shooters, guests launch virtual darts at balloons, rings at aliens and eggs at whimsical barnyard targets to see who can rack up the most points. Guests may even experience some special 4-D effects during different parts of the game. And the interactive fun doesn't stop when guests put down their toy shooters. Here's a sampling of other immersive experiences happening every day at Walt Disney World Resort: * "Block Party Bash" (Disney's Hollywood Studios). A new traveling show that lets guests play, dance and party with favorite Disney-Pixar characters from smash-hit animated films like "Toy Story," "The Incredibles," "Monsters, Inc." and "A Bug's Life." Block Party Bash rocks and rolls throughout the park, putting guests in the middle of an impromptu party during one of the wildest, most interactive street spectaculars ever. * "High School Musical 2: School's Out!" (Disney's Hollywood Studios). Wildcat fever has guests dancing in the streets in the new interactive show presented multiple times daily. Inspired by the Disney Channel's record-breaking, original film, "High School Musical 2,"the high-energy cast invites guests to join the fun as they sing and dance along to the movie's hit tunes, including "What Time Is It?," "All For One" and "I Don't Dance." * Jedi Training Academy (Disney's Hollywood Studios). Taking a cue from the popular Star Wars Saga, the power of the Force and the magic of Disney combine for an original and intergalactic entertainment experience. Young Jedi hopefuls -- known in 'Star Wars-speak' as "Padawans" -- learn lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master before facing off in a final test against the evil Darth Vader. Created with Lucasfilm Ltd., Jedi Training Academy is presented multiple times daily, adjacent to the popular Star Tours attraction. * "Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" (Disney's Hollywood Studios). Some of the most beloved characters from the Disney Channel lineup are featured in a singing, clapping and be-bopping show designed for preschoolers. The show stars favorites from popular Disney Channel programs including "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Little Einsteins," "Handy Manny" and more. * Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland). Armed with infrared lasers, Magic Kingdom guests join forces with Buzz Lightyear to defend Earth's supply of batteries from the evil Emperor Zurg in Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, a spinning, brought-to-life Tomorrowland spin-off of the hit movie "Toy Story." The shoot-'em-up fun triggers sight and sound gags, while a lighted display inside toy-spaceship ride vehicles allows guests to keep score. * Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Tutorial (Magic Kingdom Adventureland). Looking for new recruits, Captain Jack and his mate Mack lead guests through a series of pirate skill tests to prove their mettle. Who is craftiest at wooden swordplay? Who can flash their most menacing pirate grimace? Faster than you can say "Yo, Ho! Yo, Ho! A Pirate's Life for Me!" the big moment arrives: getting officially sworn in with the Pirate's Oath to become honorary buccaneers of Captain Jack's famous Pirate Crew. * Woody's Cowboy Camp (Magic Kingdom Frontierland). There's a rootin' tootin' good time in store as Woody, Jesse and Bullseye invite everyone to Woody's Cowboy Camp! Ridin' in on a wagon are some of their best cowpoke pals, along with Sam the Singin' Cowboy who leads a rollicking hoedown. Led by Bullseye and saddled up on wooden stick horses, kids giddy-up their way through a cowboy obstacle course -- maneuvering around parents donning hats shaped like cacti, mountains and mine shafts. It's kick-up-your-spurs, hootin' and hollerin' fun as the cowboy spirit comes to life on the dusty streets of Frontierland. * "Main Street Family Fun Day Parade" (Magic Kingdom Main Street, U.S.A.). For the very first time, guests are able to parade down Main Street, U.S.A. alongside favorite Disney characters. It's a pennant-waving, drum-beating rush for guests when they join characters and march alongside parade floats, a marching band and an old-timey fire truck. There's even a stroller drill team to accommodate little paraders and their parents. When the parade hits Town Square, guests join the performers for a flag-waving patriotic finale. Also happening in the theme parks every day: * "Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor" (Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland). Guests laugh, joke and match wits with the beloved animated characters from Disney-Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." in an engaging and interactive attraction created by the Disney Imagineers. "Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor" features one-eyed hero Mike Wazowski, who has opened a comedy club to collect laughs that will generate power for the future. As Monster-of-Ceremonies, Mike recruits two comedian wannabes whose slapstick humor delights and engages audiences. Guests even get to text-message jokes on their cell phones for possible use in the show. * "Turtle Talk With Crush" (Epcot). Crush, from Disney-Pixar's "Finding Nemo," has made a different kind of screen debut in The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion at Epcot -- as a chatting, joking quipster who engages guests in conversation from his movie-screen undersea environment. "Turtle Talk With Crush" showcases real-time animation using digital projection and sophisticated, voice-activated animation. And that's not all! Coming in winter 2008: * "American Idol" Attraction (Disney's Hollywood Studios). Starry-eyed Disney guests will get a taste of TV's pop culture phenomenon -- up close and personal -- when Disney's Hollywood Studios unwraps an "American Idol" attraction in winter 2008. Guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, the rush of performing on stage in competition or the thrill of judging the performances in a live interactive setting modeled after the "American Idol" set. There will be multiple show times daily. Guests advancing through the screening process have the chance, in the nightly final competition, to win a guaranteed reservation for a regional audition for the "American Idol" TV show. Toy Story Mania! Fun Facts * Each ride vehicle weighs as much as 8,580 Woody dolls. * It would take 5,026 toy soldiers lined up end-to-end to make up the total track length. * Toy Story Mania! is the first time that Walt Disney Imagineering is creating an attraction for two Disney Parks simultaneously. * It has been estimated that, each day, guests may break over one million virtual plates using the spring-action shooters. * Riders in the Sky, the award winning group that wrote the songs that Mr. Potato Head performs as part of the attraction, is the same group that wrote "Woody's Roundup" for the "Toy Story" feature films. * This is the first attraction that Walt Disney Imagineering designed where the Imagineers had to wear 3-D glasses to art direct all the black-light paint elements. * The murals located in the load area at Disney's Hollywood Studios are the biggest murals painted since Epcot was built. * In order to create a show that responds not only to every pull of a guest's spring-action shooter, but also every move their midway tram makes, there are over 150 computers communicating over multiple networks throughout the attraction. * At Toy Story Mania! every guest gets to experience life at the size of a toy. So in Andy's room, a 5 foot 6 inch person will feel about 14" tall. * More time was spent programming Mr. Potato Head than for any other Audio-Animatronics figure ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering. * Mr. Potato Head will be able to say more lines of dialogue than any Audio-Animatronics figure ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering. * The Mr. Potato Head Audio-Animatronics figure is the first time that an Audio-Animatronics figure can remove a body part and re-attach it (in the case of his ear). * The Mr. Potato Head Audio-Animatronics figure has new, highly expressive and animated eyes that can look directly at a particular guest in the queue when speaking to him/her. * Mr. Potato Head marks the first Audio-Animatronics figure whose mouth appears to form words and vowel sounds. Game: * In each of the Toy Story Mania! games, there is at least one "easter egg" -- targets that can trigger the appearance of bonus high-value targets and other changes in the scene. * Toy Story Mania! is the first time that Woody and Buzz Lightyear (along with some of their friends) from the Disney-Pixar "Toy Story" films appear together in a ride-through attraction. * Watch for loose change in the prize scene -- Hamm is carrying more than $6 in coins when his cork pops. Nice to Know: * Because of the indoor nature of the attraction and to keep the guest experience fun for all, flash photography or video is not allowed on Toy Story Mania! * Everyone can play! There is no height or age restriction for guests to experience Toy Story Mania! * Actual ride time aboard Toy Story Mania! is a full five minutes. * Ready, aim, fire! Players have 30 seconds in each game play area to score points. * A beeline to fun! American Idol is "Going to Disney World!" Disney Parks to create attraction based on the television and pop culture phenomenon Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will create an "American Idol" attraction that will bring the television and pop culture phenomenon to life at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, it was jointly announced today by Jay Rasulo, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts; Simon Fuller, CEO of 19 Entertainment; and Keith Hindle, executive vice president of FremantleMedia Licensing. The attraction, slated to debut in late 2008, will be located at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park and will follow the model of the high-energy show. Disney guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, the rush of performing on stage in competition, or the thrill of judging the performances in a live interactive entertainment setting with all the glitz and glamour of the distinctive "American Idol" set. That experience will include an audition process, open to all who register, where guests perform "live" in front of a Disneys Hollywood Studios producer to be cast in a theme park show. After backstage preparation -- working with a vocal coach, hair and make-up -- its lights up and showtime in front of a "live" audience and a panel of judges. Guest performers with the highest votes will compete in an end-of-day Grand Finale show at Walt Disney World, and the winner of the Grand Finale show will receive a guaranteed reservation for a future regional stadium audition -- to ensure no waiting in long lines. But when it comes down to the television show auditions, everyone is treated equal. "Millions of people have imagined themselves standing on the 'American Idol' stage," said Rasulo. "We're excited that we will be bringing this dream to life every day at Walt Disney World." Added Fuller, "One of the most remarkable elements about 'American Idol' is that for a brief moment each week, we can provide TV viewers the opportunity to imagine life as America's next superstar. Disney's new attraction perfectly captures what we at 'American Idol' feel is the heart and soul of this brand, real people getting a shot to make their dream a reality." "This partnership," noted Hindle, "brings the number one show on television, watched in over 100 countries, to the number one theme park destination in the world. It's a perfect combination and opportunity to offer everyone a taste of the 'American Idol' experience." (Source: Press Release, 02/07/08)

"Goofy's Mystery Tour occurred this week at Disney-MGM Studios. It's
an annual trivia/puzzle/scavenger hunt event for cast members. Teams of four
scatter to collect clues and answers across the park. Oh, and they're tethered
together with a bungee cord, so choose your friends wisely, right?"

A high-energy cast of talented performers invites audience members to join in the fun of the show, which showcases five great new songs from "High School Musical 2" and one from the original show. "High School Musical 2: School's Out!" replaces "High School Musical Pep Rally," which was inspired by the original movie. "It's been a blast working with the talented young cast of "High School Musical 2: School's Out!" said Angie Howard, show producer. "They energize Hollywood Boulevard with the tunes from the show, and with the incredible dance moves inspired by the Wildcats' summer fun. You can tell they really enjoy it, which makes it even more fun for our guests." Drawing its inspiration from the new movie, which follows the "High School Musical" characters as they head out for summer jobs and vacation, "High School Musical 2: School's Out!" entertains and engages audiences in a rockin' musical celebration. The show concludes with an all-out dance finale featuring the latest "High School Musical 2" soundtrack hit, "All for One," and a reprise of the original smash, "We're All in This Together," from the movie that started it all. Changes at Disney's MGM Studios
More changes at Disney's Hollywood Studios "there are indeed plans in the works right now to significantly increase George Lucas' presence in Disney's Hollywood Studios. To -- in effect -- create a 'Lucas Land' that stretches from the Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost all the way to Tatooine Traders."
What's on the drawing board:
DISNEY'S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS In the Walt Disney World theme park famous for all things Hollywood, it's curtain up on the launch of new attractions, new looks, new breakthrough experiences... ...and a brand-new name. Disney-MGM Studios will be renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios, effective January 2008, announced Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "The new name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer -- in music, television, movies and theater," she said. Framed by the park's supporting cast of classic Hollywood architecture are shows and attractions straight from contemporary Hollywood, such as Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" and many more. Disney's Hollywood Studios is also the place to meet favorite character stars of today including Lightning McQueen and Mater from Disney-Pixar's "Cars," Power Rangers and Little Einsteins. With exciting coming attractions and experiences, the best and brightest of Hollywood is about to emerge for park guests, Crofton said. "As Disney continues to grow and invest in our family entertainment business, we constantly explore new ways to deliver high-quality, immersive experiences for our guests," she added. "As a park all about entertainment, Disney's Hollywood Studios will deliver like never before. Now we can say that Hollywood is literally our middle name." New Attractions, Experiences * Toy Story Mania! Guests get sporty in a new, interactive "Toy Story" competition inspired by Disney-Pixar's "Toy Story" films and hosted by characters like they've never before experienced. Past a queuing area featuring a giant Mr. Potato Head, guests grab 3-D glasses, board fanciful ride vehicles and zip into a world of exciting midway-style games hosted by many of their favorite "Toy Story" characters including Woody, Hamm and Rex. Once inside "Andy's Toy Box," the competition heats up. Who can rack up the most points? Using spring-action shooters, guests launch darts at balloons, rings at aliens, eggs at whimsical barnyard targets. Toy Story Mania! takes the interactive ride-game experience to infinity -- and beyond. (summer 2008) * "Block Party Bash." Play, party and dance as the Disney-Pixar Film Pals present "Block Party Bash," the wildest, most interactive parade in Disney history. New to Disney's Hollywood Studios, "Block Party Bash" will invite guests to rock to retro tunes, be dazzled by high-flying acrobatics and join in the fun as more than 20 partying Disney-Pixar Film Pals fill the theme park streets. This immersive rolling spectacle will feature favorite characters from "The Incredibles," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "A Bug's Life." (spring 2008, replaces "Disney Stars and Motor Cars" parade) * "Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" A whole new cast of friends from Playhouse Disney fills the popular Playhouse Disney stage. Children will be on their feet singing, clapping and dancing to performing stars from "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Little Einsteins," "Handy Manny" and more. ("Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" will be dark most of January 2008, reopens February 2008) * "Disney High School Musical 2: School's Out!" With new songs and a rollicking new spirit, the Disney Channel Original Movie "High School Musical 2" comes to life on the streets of Disney's Hollywood Studios. It is interactive fun as high-energy performers on a traveling stage invite all ages to catch Wildcat fever by singing and dancing. (fall 2007, replaces "High School Musical Pep Rally") * Meet and Greet Adds Handy Manny. And what would a Disney theme park be without characters? Disney's Hollywood Studios is center stage for character meet and greets. Disney Channel stars JoJo and Goliath and the Little Einsteins welcome guests in the Animation Courtyard next to "Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage!" and will be joined for the first time by Handy Manny later this year. (November 2007) Part of the Disney's Hollywood Studios magic includes events for which the park is famous. To a stellar lineup including ABC Super Soap Weekend, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, ESPN the Weekend and Star Wars Weekends, the park reprises the Playhouse Disney in Concert series with dynamic concerts and special entertainment for little ones. Headliners include favorite children's acts The Doodlebops, Imagination Movers, Dan Zanes and Friends, and Johnny and the Sprites. The fun happens on select dates Aug. 30-Oct. 28, 2007, during Little Ones Travel Time in a 10,000 square foot, air-conditioned performance venue. For the complete show schedule: disneyworld.com/pdic. In addition, holidays at Disney's Hollywood Studios will have a special sparkle this year as the park hosts the Harlem Gospel Choir Nov. 30-Dec. 25, 2007. "This is easily one of the most ambitious attractions rollouts in the 18-year history of the park," Crofton said. "With so many great coming attractions, we are thrilled to be launching a Studios year unlike any other. Wrapped in a brand-new name...Disney's Hollywood Studios." (Source: Press Release, 08/09/07) "Disney Sports is pleased to introduce The Twilight Zone Tower of TerrorTM 13K, which is the first night race in the Endurance Series at WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. The fish-out-of-water comedy-adventure is directed by Brad Bird, who won an Academy Award for the Disney-Pixar film, "The Incredibles." (Source: Press Release) "Zowie! Stan Lee, the creator of such comic-book superheroes as Spider-Man and X-Men, has signed an exclusive content deal with Walt Disney Studios... Under the multiyear agreement, the studio gets first shot at films, TV shows, books and video games devised by the 84-year-old Lee and his company, POW! Entertainment." Toy Story Animated Characters Create Fun and Mania In Disney Parks - New Attraction Comes to Florida and California in 2008 It's the wondrous world of Woody the Cowboy, Buzz Lightyear and Green Army Men. And coming in 2008, guests of Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts get to ride and play inside an energy-filled toybox of fun with the debut on both coasts of "Toy Story Mania." Celebrating the Disney-Pixar classics "Toy Story" and "Toy Story II," "Toy Story Mania" will take the interactive ride-game experience to exciting new heights. High-tech yet rooted in classic midway games of skill, "Toy Story Mania" will match the delightful characters of the films with games that best suit their very animated personalities. Fun for the whole family, "Toy Story Mania" will immerse guests of Disney-MGM Studios and Disney's California Adventure into the "Toy Story" world as never before. Donning 3-D glasses, guests shrink to the size of a toy, and hop into fanciful ride vehicles that travel and twist along a colorful midway-themed route. Upon arriving at each game booth, they will aim for animated targets using their own special on-board "toy cannon." As guests score points, they will be cheered on by favorite "Toy Story" friends like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Bo Peep and the Little Green Men. Hidden targets garner players extra points and lead to different levels of play. The energy of the characters, the competition with other riders and the hilarious, unpredictable game action make this a unique experience that families will want to try again and again. The attraction features games that audiences of all ages and skills -- from beginner to serious gamer -- can enjoy. No matter how many times guests return to ride and play, they can be sure every ride-through will be different. Players pair up and sit side-by-side for a friendly competition that delivers an ever-changing variety of targets and surprises. (Source: Press Release, 01/25/07)
Vicki writes: "Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your newsletters. I have been to Disney and Universal more times than I can count and I always enjoy our stays. Disney is changing I think and for the better as far as competing with Universal Studios. But I have to say that the Tower of Terror ride at MGM Disney is the best ride bar none. It rocks! Please keep the great newsletters coming, Thank you so much for a little bit of Disney magic on my email. Keep it up."
The Walt Disney exhibit at MGM consists of three rooms:
Room #1: Showcases the period from Walt's birth up to Disneyland. Here you'll
find his grade school desk, a model of Main Street USA, etc.
Denise writes: "Hi! I just wanted to let your subscribers know about Star Wars Weekends at MGM (it ran from mid May through June 15). My family just got back (our 6 year old son is a huge SW fan) from this spectacular event. He got to meet all of the characters and took part in the various kid-friendly activities like Jedi training and trivia contests. If you like Star Wars, it's worth going to. It's a trip our son won't soon forget! We also saw Fantasmic for the 1st time-WOW! Even our 2 year old was fascinated with the fireworks, animation and characters. Disney cast members truly are memory makers! :)"
April writes: "Hi John, I'm going to Disney in October with my family, a five year old and four year old. My question is this, would it be more suitable to go to Universal over MGM due to the ages of my children? People have told me that Universal would be better for the kids rather than MGM." MGM would be more suitable for young children.
Fantasmic! Fantasmic!, Disney's newest spectacular featuring Mickey Mouse battling the forces of evil, is drawing big crowds at the Disney-MGM Studios. It replaced Sorcery In The Sky. The 25-minute show plays nightly at the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater at the end of Sunset Blvd. behind the Tower of Terror. The set includes a 40-ft high mountain and a man-made lagoon. The amphitheater has 6,900 seats and room for 2,600 to stand. Loud explosions may scare children under 6 years of age. Avoid the front ten rows if you don't want to be sprayed with water. Disney says it may bring the Sorcery in the Sky Fireworks Spectacle back for special events. Becky writes: "Our 30-day countdown is on! We'll be spending our Halloween (Oct. 25-Oct.30) this year with Mickey and gang (already have our tix), but I do have a couple of questions. My husband won a trip that included air fare, 3-nights in Orlando, and passes to Nick Studios. Since I had to book through a travel agency, your information was a great help [enabling] me ... to negotiate for exactly what I wanted. I really want to make sure the family sees Fantasmic. Is one day over another better? Should I expect to have the same types of problems getting in as someone reported on the list recently even though this is one of their least busy times? We hadn't planned on doing dinner at MGM, but if need be, we can, so tips on which is the less expensive that you can get passes at would be appreciated." During the slow season, Fantasmic! only plays once nightly. We have never had a problem getting in. One time we arrived 30 minutes before show time and they placed us in unused seats for the handicapped! You can make your reservations for the dinner package up to a week in advance at your hotel's Guest Services or MGM. WDW Dining does not handle these reservations. At MGM, reserve your package at the kiosk at Hollywood and Sunset, or outside at the park's Guest Relations if you don't want to enter. Restaurants in the package are the Brown Derby and Mama Melrose. Mama Melrose is cheaper. Disney adds other choices from time to time -- be sure to ask. Each adult diner is required to order an entree. After your meal, you will receive a ticket that grants you access to a special reserved seating section. This will permit you to arrive 30-45 minutes early and get a seat. Seats are not reserved, only the section. Best seats go the early birds -- those arriving 45-60 minutes early. Look for the Fantasmic! sign on Hollywood Blvd next to Oscar's Super Service right after you enter the park. If you arrive less than 30 minutes before show time, you will get standing room only. A Cast Member will guide you through a gate to the seating area. They can cancel the show if there is lightning. We have sat through it in ponchos while it poured! Your ticket can not be used on another day. "I also have seen that the food court at Port Orleans is nicer than that at the Allstars. Is there any reason why we can't visit the other resorts and eat meals there?" You can eat anywhere you choose at WDW.
Lockers Tina writes: "... what size are the lockers and the price for rental?" Each theme park and the Transportation and Ticket Center have lockers that rent for $5 (includes a $2 refundable deposit). If you have some items that won't fit in the locker, give them to the locker attendant at Guest Relations at MGM. If you plan to park hop, you don't have to pay another locker deposit. See the locker attendant for particulars.
Rock 'N' Roller Coaster Reaching 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds, the Rock 'n' Roller takes riders on a tour of Southern California at night (the ride is completely enclosed -- even the tracks are dark!), past landmarks of Hollywood. Guests board a stretch limousine that holds 24 passengers and resembles a 1962 Cadillac. Expect an 85-foot climb and 5 inversions! In a move to attract the teenage market, Disney commissioned the rock group, Aerosmith, to produce 6 soundtracks that are broadcast from 120 speakers in the car. The soundtracks are all different so that a repeat rider will not hear the same music every time. The music features Aerosmith's greatest hits.
Sounds Dangerous Sounds Dangerous Starring Drew Carey (at the former ABC Sound Studio) features Drew Carey as an undercover agent on the trail of smugglers. The camera he has concealed on his tie malfunctions and the movie screen and theater go completely dark for nine minutes! Fortunately for the audience, we are wearing head phones so we can hear all the action as the movie continues with audio only. If you like bees and electric shavers in your ears, you'll enjoy this show. May frighten very young children.
