Beth, our travel agent, recently returned from Walt Disney World. She writes about Dining around the World: "The majority of our meals were covered by conference catering, but we did get to munch at a few other places Beaches & Cream Man, I just love this place. I hate the wait (reservations not accepted), its usually noisy, and its a bit overpriced, but I still love it. We shared a veggie burger and substituted onion rings for the fries ($1 fee to do so). Yum on both counts - and the server was happy to serve the meal divided onto two plates for us. The sundaes are large (and to die for), so you could use one table service meal credit to do as we did (divide the meal) and both be satisfied. Big eaters wont want to share, though. Beware: a separate side order of onion rings is HUGE! Beaches & Cream is located at the Beach Club near the pool. San Angel Inn Talk about disappointing. First, they didnt have our reservation. I know, I always tell all of you to take your reservation numbers with you - and I did have mine... back in my suitcase in the room. Despite the missing reservation, they did let us in. And then we waited - and waited. It was about ten minutes before we were finally greeted and got our drinks and our chips with salsa (both excellent). I was once again dining with a vegetarian and Im not big on meat myself, so we were having some trouble finding something to eat. The menu is very limited, and none of the usual burritos, etc. are on there. The fine print at the bottom said theyd try to work with special diets, though, so when our server returned we asked if we could do a burrito with beans and cheese, and another entrée without the steak. No on both counts but they did offer a vegetarian menu. Yea! Again, disappointment, though. There were only two things on it: a salad, and a tortilla with black beans and grilled veggies. Well, I figured that tortilla was sort of like a flat burrito so I went that way. My companion managed to talk them into doing the Filete Motuleno minus the beef, and for a reduced price of $18 (same as mine). Both were good - although my companions dish was spicy to the point of burning lips and teary eyes so be sure to request it mild if killer spicy isnt your thing. The thing is, while the atmosphere is lovely and the food is tasty and authentic, its very pricey considering what youre eating. Definitely use a dining credit if you go, and be sure to request a table near the river if they have one. It would be worth waiting just a few extra minutes for one with that nice view. Cookes of Dublin Located in Downtown Disney, this is the counter service side of Raglan Road, the Irish restaurant (which I love, by the way). What caught our eye was the 'double dipped' onion rings. Well do anything for a good onion ring, and these babies were awesome! You pay $4 for a portion large enough to share with a friend. Theyre made to order, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and very unique. Two thumbs up. We also tried the chips (fries) and found them to be equally yummy. Again, crispy on the outside, like mashed potatoes on the inside, and made to order. We got to watch other orders going out as well, and they all looked delicious, from the batter-dipped fish to the Dublin-style pies to the fried candy bars. (Yes, really. As if they werent unhealthy enough to start with!) Cant wait to get back to this place and try some more things. Horrible for the diet, but otherwise heavenly. Wetzels Pretzels If youve never had them, theyre delicious. Wait a few minutes to get them fresh right from the oven if you can. There are two locations in Downtown Disney, one across from the giant Disney store, and a much larger one next to the Characters in Flight balloon in the West End section. Theyre about the best pretzels around from this sort of place, but for a pretzel and lemonade youll spend over $7, so its more of a splurge than at your local shopping mall. Cosmic Rays This is one of the few places open in the Magic Kingdom during Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party, so its a good one to be aware of .. plus, they have the free hot chocolate and cookies there that party goers get, so its convenient. We shared another veggie burger and some fries. Average on both counts. What I love, though, is the free topping bar. We loaded up on sauteed mushrooms, onions, and cheese sauce. And THATS why I say this is the best place to get a burger, veggie or otherwise. Cantina de San Angel Those chips were so good from our dinner a few nights earlier we thought wed see if they were the same at the counter service place outside the Mexican pavilion at Epcot. Again dining with my vegetarian friend, the idea was to split an order of nachos without the beef, but alas, when I heard the special order would take ten minutes (after Id already been waiting in line at least 15 minutes) I had to think fast. I ordered two childrens grilled cheese quesadilla meals which come with chips, cheese sauce, carrots and a drink for $4.99 each. Bargain! The splurge was a foot-long churro which was truly not worth the $3.25 price tag. So order the kid meal then stroll over to France for a pastry instead. By the way, this is the place I always suggest to families trying to stretch their counter service credits.. a burrito meal can be shared and should be enough for two adults that dont eat much, two kids, or an adult and child. You wont be stuffed, but youll be good until dinner time."
