NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD" Walt Disney World "With more than 850 acres of lakes, 66 miles of canals, two water parks and more than 60 swimming pools, Walt Disney World offers a cool-down option wherever you roam." (Source: Southern Living Magazine, 06/02/05) For the rest of the story, click here. -------------------------------- "Later this month, Orlando International Airport passengers will be able to enroll in a registered traveler program that will save time at the security gates... Those passengers who register as a "known traveler" -- submitting to a background check, a series of questions, and iris and fingerprint scanning -- will be granted express access at the airport's security checkpoint, avoiding long lines and random secondary inspections... Eventually, passengers may be able to subscribe to a national registered-traveler network, which would grant them express access at any airport's security checkpoint." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 06/02/05) For the rest of the story, click here. -------------------------------- "Despite burgeoning demand and a rising dollar, Disney Cruise Lines President Tom McAlpin said on Friday that the Walt Disney Co... has no immediate plans to build a third ship... The 12 cruises from the Port of Los Angeles to Mexico's Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas were arranged to mark Disneyland's 50th anniversary, and have proved popular." (Reuters. 05/27/05) For the rest of the story, click here. -------------------------------- Closed for Refurbishment Disney's Contemporary Resort South Garden Wing: May 30 - Oct. 31
Disney Cruise Line "With a swish of a wand, several Bibbidi Bobbidi Boos and the turning of storybook pages, the brand new stage show aboard Disney Cruise Line -- 'Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story' -- immerses audiences in a new rendition of the happily ever after story of Cinderella and her Prince Charming. Giving guests an opportunity to experience the story of Cinderella in a whole new way, the Broadway-style show recently made its theatrical debut in the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship, just in time for the ship's special West Coast cruises honoring the 50th anniversary of the Disneyland park... After its debut, 'Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story' will continue to run aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship throughout 2005, as the ship returns back to her East Coast Caribbean itineraries." Disneyland California "Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters Online Interactive Experience is now available. This virtual experience (a Disneyland first) allows players to connect from home and engage in live action from the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters attraction at Disneyland Park during park hours." "I thought I knew all the tips for saving money at WDW, even being a member of the Magic Kingdom Club for over 15 years, but just learning about [your ticket agent] saved our family over $300.00! Thanks." Janet Handy, Bel Air, MD "Plenty of roadside outfits in Orlando promise discounted tickets, but most of them really want to rope you into a time-share sales pitch in exchange for vouchers - accept at your own risk. [Affordable Disney's ticket agent], though, is legit." The New York Post, November 16, 2004. NEVER overpay again! Join our Disney family today and keep that extra money in YOUR pocket!
Beth, our travel agent, writes: "Up through the end of December 2004, if you booked a room at Port Orleans Riverside with five people you were charged an extra $15 a night + tax for the use of the trundle bed in those rooms. They stopped charging that fee as of January 2, 2005. If you booked in 2005 and were charged the trundle fee, they can fix that."
Toni writes: "What is downtown disney? Is it a shopping area or a hotel?" It is a shopping area. Several hotels (not owned or operated by Disney) are located on Disney property next to the shopping area. So people refer to the shopping area with adjoining hotels as Downtown Disney. To avoid confusion, I try to refer to the hotels there as Downtown Disney Resort Hotels.
Danny writes: "John, In the last update you talked about bringing drink mix for your water. crystal light makes a single serving drink mix, but walmart's brand is 1/3 the price and tastes better. it will cost 8 cents to flavor your own water instead of paying two dollars a bottle for soda."
Beth, our travel agent, had some corrections to last week's issue: "The Q&A about buying a 10-day ticket if you're staying 8 or 9 days... They DO sell 8 and 9 day tickets now. The part about Beaches & Cream and Pepper Market being the only counter service places to charge gratuity... They both still do have gratuity included when you eat there, but under the newest Dining Plan chart Beaches & Cream is now a table service location. The only counter service, then, where they include gratuity is Pepper Market at Coronado Springs."

Bill from England writes: "hi john, i would just like to say how much i like your book and your emails, went to disney september 2003 and thanks to your book saved time and money. bought my tickets from [your ticket agent]: 5 disney and 5 flexi tickets. i have still not found anyone cheaper not without a catch anyway. the travel agent who i booked with advised me to get the pool heated at a cost of £80 (USD $145) a week, i asked [your ticket agent] about this and he told me not to bother as it doesn't usually cool down till november. he was right. my 3 kids were splashing about till midnight with no pool heating so we saved £240 (USD $435) with just one little tip. needless to say i will be getting my tickets from [your ticket agent] when we return in sept 2005. don't feel left out john i also saved loads of money with your tips, water bottles, packed lunches, coupons, the list in your book goes on and on. thanks again john. keep up the good work and keep saving us brits loadsa money."
Scott writes: "We are traveling with our family (10 in all) for a Disney Land and Sea. My son has suffered a severe double fracture in his leg. He is in a full leg cast for now and will be in at least a foot to knee cast at the time of the trip. We think it would be a struggle for him to crutch it around Disney and on the ship. This is also a concern with his Orthopedic doctor. He is only 12 but is 5'10" tall and very lean. The cast as it is right now weighs more than he does. Is there a way I can arrange for a wheelchair in Disney and on the cruise. Please let me know. I am a lifetime member." Yes, Disney has wheelchairs for rent in the parks and for free at the hotels. You can also rent them and ECV's from outside sources. Those in wheelchairs get the best treatment at WDW - special seating areas, etc! And up to 6 in your party. See our chapter, Disney and the Disabled, for all the details. The Disney cruise ships have a limited number of wheelchairs, but if you want to take it to ports of call, rent one that you can bring with you.
Are You Suffering Withdrawal From WDW? You know ... that empty feeling you get when you arrive back home from your vacation at WDW and realize it may be a while before you experience that Disney magic again? We have had that feeling ourselves many times. Yet, we always seem to feel better when we read about the experiences of others who share their trip reports with us. It's almost like being there again. We invite you, our readers, to send us some feedback about your experiences during your latest vacation at WDW. Reports on Disney weddings, honeymoons, cruises, and resort vacations on and off Disney property are all welcome. Send your email to: johngross@affordabledisney.com . Thanks!
