Hi Everyone!

Today marks the 200th issue of our newsletter which is being sent to almost 11,000 subscribers! That represents quite a milestone for us and we hope that we have brought some joy and knowledge to you, our readers, over the years.

We know that there are newsletters out there that have many thousands more subscribers, but we have never measured the success of our business by the number of subscribers, but by the number of satisfied customers. Accordingly, we have decided to concentrate our efforts on building a close-knit community of Disney fans who have made and continue to make a financial investment in our business - the active members of our Disney family.

Consequently, beginning this week we will no longer accept new subscriptions to our newsletter from the general public. Only our customers - current members and lifetime members - will be added to our mailing list.

On February 16, we are going to begin delivering our newsletter in HTML format - the format of web pages. We will also send out a text version like this one for those who have email programs that can't read HTML. Don't worry about determining which version you can receive. The newsletter is capable of reading your email program and will send the appropriate version to you without your intervention!

Anita took a look at last week's issue and wrote: "John I love the HTML version, much easier to read. Keep up the great work."

Thank you, Anita, for the great feedback. Writing the newsletter in both formats does involve more work, but we feel the result is well worth the effort.

So that we can make the transition to a new format and a restricted subscriber base, we are going to transfer our newsletter to a new list server, Ezine Director. Ezine Director hosts the subscriber lists for the Boy and Girl Scouts, MSN Travel, The Red Cross and many other fine organizations. We are confident that they will do a wonderful job of hosting our newsletter as well.

Current Members

We invite all of our active members to send us the following information so we can verify your membership and add you to our new mailing list:

  • email address where you want to receive The Disney News
  • the date you purchased your current membership and the name, mailing address, and email address you used on the order form
  • send your information to member@affordabledisney.com before February 13, 2004. The February 9 issue will be the last issue that non-members will receive.

Once we have verified your current membership, we will email you a link that you will use to subscribe. Ezine Director will send you a follow-up email asking you to click on a link in that email to verify that you want to join our list.

An Invitation To Non-Members

We invite all non-member readers to join our Disney family so you don't miss a single issue. The basic version of our online book only costs $29.95. Our newsletter is worth more than that and it's included free with your membership! To join our Disney family, click here.

Note: Be sure to add our email address to your address books so our newsletter is not blocked by any spam filter!

Now... Lean back, prop up your feet, and take a Disney break!

News From Around The "World"

"From balconies overlooking the savannahs, hotel guests marvel as creatures large and small roam the grasses, forage for food and play in harmony. But now Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge concierge-level guests can actually enter this serene animal reserve for an up-close personal encounter thanks to the newly launched Wanyama Safari experience." (Source: Walt Disney World Press Release, 01/22/04) For details, click here.

Disney sells Celebration! "Disney sold downtown Celebration to a New York investment firm Wednesday in a move that residents of this ultimate company town said they hope spawns more businesses geared to residents instead of tourists." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 01/22/04) For the rest of the story, click here.

Screamscape: Chris writes: "As always, enjoy your updates. I just happened to stumble upon a web-site devoted to providing construction updates, etc. for (looks like) every amusement park in the US and then some. Some of the information is rumors, but other information, such as ride closing dates (for maintenance, etc.) would be very beneficial for someone planning a trip.

Just thought I'd pass this along. Here is the link for the WDW page. There are other pages for all of the other attractions."

Thanks, Chris. I visit Screamscape from time to time to read about the latest rumor. Screamscape.Com is currently reporting:

Magic Kingdom:

  • Liberty Square Riverboat is closed until February 8 and Astro Orbiter will go dark Jan 26 to February 20. (1/14/04)
  • To allow guests to get a better view of the new fireworks show, Disney has removed the large tree in the Hub area. (1/9/04)
  • Mickey’s Star Traders gift shop is now closed while Disney works to add Stitch to Alien Encounter. In the meantime, shoppers can visit the gift shop near Timekeeper, which is currently open. (1/19/04)

Epcot: Look for Nemo characters outside the Living Seas and a real-life exhibit inside. (1/19/04)

MGM: Disney is adding a new script to its new shorter version of the Backlot Tour, one which eliminates any mention of the now defunct Animation Building. The tour is closed now to allow for construction of the new stunt show. (1/21/04)

Animal Kingdom: Kali River Rapids will go dark January 20-30. Triceratop Spin will be closed February 9 to March 16th. (1/14/04)

Sandy writes:

"I just had to write to thank you and Beth for the great tip I received earlier this month. I had already booked out hotel for the trip we are planning over March Break when I saw a great deal come up on the weekly update. I took some advice from your book and called to ask if I could apply the deal to our reservation (you always say it never hurts to ask) and the reservationist was very helpful and used the new rates to adjust our room rate. That tip alone is saving us $55.00 US a night on our room!!!

I am just thrilled. To be honest even after signing up for your book I didn't expect to get any "great deals" but I wasn't really concerned because I have found all your tips and info about WDW to be so helpful in planning our trip.

Suffice it to say this savings is the icing on the cake. Thank you for making the planning of our WDW vacation so much fun and so affordable."

Thank you, Sandy, for your kind comments. You make all the work worthwhile.

Are You Suffering Withdrawal From WDW?

You know ... that empty feeling you get when you arrive back home from your vacation at WDW and realize it may be a while before you experience that Disney magic again? We have had that feeling ourselves many times. Yet, we always seem to feel better when we read about the experiences of others who share their trip reports with us. It's almost like being there again.

We invite you, our readers, to send us some feedback about your experiences during your latest vacation at WDW. Reports on Disney weddings, honeymoons, cruises, and resort vacations on and off Disney property are all welcome. Email us at johngross@affordabledisney.com . Thanks!

Jeff writes:

"Just wanted to let the readers know how important it is to put address labels on items that could be lost!

We visited Walt Disney World the entire week of this past Christmas. We took an entire day to visit the Disney resorts and take a picture of all of the Christmas trees and decorations inside each resort. We even took a horse and carriage ride at the Port Orleans resort. When we got home and had all of our film developed we noticed that one roll was missing, the one with the Christmas tress and the carriage ride. We thought our memories were lost when much to our surprise we went to the mailbox (16 days after we returned) and there was an envelope from Disney. It was our lost roll of film with the address label stuck to the film container along with a very nice letter from their "lost and found" team. They even paid for the postage!"

Thanks, Jeff, for the great tip! We invite our readers to share their tips so we can all benefit from their experience.
