Walt Disney World Resort for Adults: The Fun Gets Better With Age LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Call em "tweenagers" -- the crowd whose generation falls somewhere between lifes fast lane and easy-does-it, between P.Diddy and Presley, between lasers and lava lamps. Baby Boomers born from 1946 through 1964 represent a whopping one-third of the U.S. population. They grew up with Walt Disney World. But they havent outgrown Walt Disney World. Never mind that the kids have moved out and gray hair is moving in. Never mind that they can name the original Mouseketeers but are clueless as to who or what constitutes Unk or Stone Sour. As the Boomers have grown up, so has Walt Disney World Resort. From one Magic Kingdom to a 40-square-mile vacationland consisting of theme parks, water parks, resort hotels, Downtown Disney nightlife/shopping district and other magical attractions and recreational centers. Now that theyve paid off the mortgage or maybe the kids college tuition, its their time. And what better way for Boomers to spend it than to revisit and remember the magic of Walt Disney World Resort? Sure, kid-friendly attractions are the cornerstone here. But theres a grown-up, less frenetic side of the Vacation Kingdom. Like music in a splendid dance palace. Salmon steaks at breakfast. Golf lessons. Flower gardens that look as good as they smell. "Lots of adults, both younger ones (pre-kid) and older people whose children have flown the coop (post-kid), are descending on the parks with needs and notions that are vastly different from those of the parental persuasion," observed Jill Safro, editor of Birnbaums Walt Disney World without kids (Hearst Business Publishing). And, OK Boomers: You can ride Space Mountain like you did 20 years ago. Or drop in a free-falling elevator in The Twilight ZoneTM Tower of Terror, just to prove to your kids youre hip as ever. But if your vacation march is to the beat of "brushes on snares" rather than ear-splitting heavy metal, here are some Disney best bets with a "grown-up" slant: Resorts Disneys BoardWalk is a whole district of dining, entertainment and recreation that might have shifted 700 miles south. A broad wooden boardwalk on a waterfront is the "main drag" of the resort complex. Stroll the boardwalk or rent a peddle-driven surrey bike built for two or four. Shoot a "hoop," win a prize. Taste the micro-brewed beers of Big River Grille & Brewing Works. Dance the night away in the elegant Atlantic Dance ballroom. Accommodations evoke the charm of early Mid-Atlantic coastal inns. "A forested wonder" -- thats the way Birnbaums Walt Disney World: The Official Guide depicts Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. It is more than 700 acres of cypress and pine forest that have been carefully laid out as a campground with nearly 1,200 sites. Its a home-away-from-home for everyone from tent campers to folks who prefer one of the Wilderness Cabins complete with fully equipped kitchens, air conditioning and maid service. There is a white sand beach and a marina on Bay Lake, a nature trail and waterways for fishing. Canoeing and pedal boating complete this idyllic vacation setting. To make reservations, phone 407/W-DISNEY. Imagine times and places long ago and sometimes far away. The fantasy experiences for which the Walt Disney World theme parks are world-famous extend to the resorts. Across Seven Seas Lagoon from Magic Kingdom are ports of call that welcome guests to the South Seas (Disneys Polynesian Resort) and 19th century South Florida (Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa). Some of the other adventures: the old New England seaside (Disneys Beach Club Resort and Disneys Yacht Club Resort), the heyday of the mid-Atlantic shore (Disneys BoardWalk), Americas great western parks (Disneys Wilderness Lodge), the American Southwest (Disneys Coronado Springs Resort), the Old South (Disneys Port Orleans Resort), exotic Africa (Disneys Animal Kingdom Lodge), and the fads and crazes of the 20th century (Disneys Pop Century Resort). Recreation If golfs your game, Walt Disney World Resort has days worth of challenges that have helped earn the Vacation Kingdom a distinction as one of the countrys top golf resorts. Disneys Osprey Ridge Golf Course was crafted by Tom Fazio, while veteran designer Joe Lee was architect of the Magnolia, Palm and Lake Buena Vista courses. To make reservations, call 407/WDW-GOLF. Tennis, anyone? Walt Disney World Resort answers with 30 of the finest courts in Central Florida. For guests who love the great outdoors, adventures abound by land or by sea. There are trails for jogging, biking and horseback riding. And for fun on the water, guests can skim across Walt Disney World waterways aboard a personal Sea Raycer watercraft. These modern-looking mini-powerboats make waves as they cut through open water. Sailboats, pontoon boats, canopy boats, pedal boats, rowboats and canoes are also available rentals at select Walt Disney World marinas. For more information on these activities call 407/WDW-PLAY. Even sports fishermens dreams come true at Walt Disney World Resort. Guests on BASS-guided fishing excursions routinely catch bass weighing 2 to 8 pounds. And BASS fishing participants at Walt Disney World Resort receive a one-year BASS membership, including 11 issues of Bassmaster Magazine, special discounts and more. For reservations, call 407/WDW-BASS (939-2277). Relaxing and Eating Breakfast can be a civilized great adventure if you know the menu. Some ways to start the day at Walt Disney World Resort: Smoked Norwegian salmon with bagels and cream cheese (Concourse Steak House at Disneys Contemporary Resort), thick French toast stuffed with bananas (Kona Cafe at Disneys Polynesian Resort) and Egg Rotollo -- eggs with chorizo, onions, peppers and cheddar rolled in lavosh (Spoodles at Disneys BoardWalk). Need a lunch break? If youre spending the day in Magic Kingdom, at lunchtime hop on the monorail for a quick trip to Grand Floridian Cafe at Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, where youll experience a great meal and a nice change of pace. Dinner is a regal occasion at Victoria & Alberts, an intimate dining room with just 18 tables at Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Elegant touches include Royal Doulton china, Cristofle silver and Riedel crystal. Culinary offerings are created daily with the best available fresh ingredients. Indulgence knows no boundaries with the pampering guests receive at the two full-service spas at Walt Disney World Resort. The Spa at Disneys Saratoga Springs Resort combines Disneys expertise in service with natural spa therapies from around the world. The Grand Floridian Spa & Health Club offers 17 treatment rooms for massage, herbal wraps and aromatherapy. Snuggled away on the far southeast corner of Walt Disney World property is Celebration, a new community with an old-fashioned downtown where an evening stroll can end at a cinema or a cozy restaurant with tables along the sidewalk. Nightlife Downtown Disney West Side, a hip corner of Downtown Disney, features some of the worlds most exciting restaurants, nightclubs and shopping adventures. Highlights include Cirque du Soleil, Virgin Megastore, House of Blues, Wolfgang Puck Cafe and Bongos Cuban Cafe. Downtown Disney Pleasure Island is a nightlife district that includes a comedy club that is always good for a chuckle. Note: Youll hear plenty of hot-rocking sounds from clubs along the street en route to your club of choice. And how is this for Boomer nirvana -- adults can savor a smoke and premium cocktails at Fuego by Sosa Cigars, a stylish lounge next to Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant. Watch a dazzling fireworks show. Choose between "Wishes" at Magic Kingdom and "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" at Epcot. Or catch "Fantasmic!" at Disneys Hollywood Studios or the "SpectroMagic" parade at Magic Kingdom as they light up the night sky. Theme Parks Take a grand circle tour of Magic Kingdom aboard the Walt Disney World Railroad, churn along Rivers of America aboard a Liberty Square riverboat and catch a ride on a horse-drawn trolley down Main Street, U.S.A. Be a kid again, revisiting the attractions of Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom -- its a small world; Peter Pans Flight; Cinderellas Golden Carrousel; Snow Whites Scary Adventure; Dumbo, the Flying Elephant; The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh; and "Mickeys PhilharMagic" 3-D spectacular. Epcot World Showcase features 11 nations of the world in architecture, dining, art and history exhibits, entertainment and shopping. A tree-lined promenade encircling a peaceful lagoon is the byway connecting the countries: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, The American Adventure, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom and Canada. In the Future World section of Epcot, Boomers can get lofty on Soarin -- a breathtaking, wind-in-your-hair experience simulating flight over the natural wonders of California. Riders are softly lifted 40 feet into an 80-foot projection screen dome that fills their field of vision with the spectacle of the Golden State. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is an annual six-week-long rite of autumn celebrating the food, beverages and cultures from more than 25 regions. The gardens of Epcot are never brighter than during the months of March through early June, when guests discover the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. There are lectures, demonstrations and gardens ablaze with colorful displays from the entrance plaza to the far reaches of World Showcase. The heyday of Hollywood is captured in the architecture of Disneys Hollywood Studios. The park has its own Hollywood and Vine, and also a Sunset Boulevard that recalls the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown. The trip down memory lane is completed by The Great Movie Ride, a ride through famous moments from the big screen, and The Hollywood Brown Derby, where the famous Cobb salad of the former Vine Street restaurant is alive and well along with the interior design of the one-time hangout of Hollywood stars. Boomers who grooved to '70s rock will want to take a spin on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. Unleash your inner explorer with a day at Disneys Animal Kingdom. Up-close encounters with exotic animals and adventures of the prehistoric kind await guests at this theme park that sprawls across 500 acres. The parks largest attraction, Kilimanjaro Safaris, is an incredible journey across an "African savannah" where hundreds of animals roam free. Timing your visit for the cooler months and away from the peaks of family vacationing can add to the comfort of the adventure. Prime time for family vacations is when the kids are out of school -- during the summer months of June, July and August, around major holidays and spring break late February to mid-April. Nominations Open Throughout September for 2009 Disneys Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Teens from across the country with big dreams and aspirations can be nominated during September to be part of the Disneys Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey class of 2009. One hundred high school students will be selected from among those nominated to participate in the academy Feb. 12-15, 2009, at Walt Disney World Resort. An event created to inspire and enrich high school students, Disneys Dreamers Academy will include workshops with Disney cast members and executives, sessions with entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and time to enjoy the Disney theme parks - where participants can see, first-hand, the results of people who turned their dreams into careers as "Disney dreamers." The student participants will learn about careers in everything from culinary arts to animation, set design and show production to the business of sports and more. During the inaugural Disneys Dreamers Academy in January 2008, some of the guest speakers were Chef Jeff Henderson, National Football League Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, pop/R&B recording artists Fantasia and Keyshia Cole, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and, of course, syndicated radio personality Steve Harvey. The Disneys Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be made up of teens nominated between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2008. Young dreamers - who must be enrolled in high school for the 2008-09 term - can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations - even themselves. Although a high GPA is not required, students must exhibit a desire to learn, perhaps needing only additional motivational support to excel. Nomination forms can be found at www.SteveHarvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy. A select panel of judges including Steve Harvey, community leaders and Disney representatives will choose the 100 finalists. The Disneys Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be announced in November 2008. "We received more than 3,000 nominations for the first Disneys Dreamers Academy in 2008," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Due to that incredible response, were really looking forward to continuing the academy in 2009." Harvey said Disneys Dreamers Academy "is about inspiring our young people who oftentimes dont have the chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and job opportunities and meet with people in the fields theyre interested in. We want to give our young achievers the tools to become overachievers - to make their dreams a reality." (Source: Press Release, 08/18/08)

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Adventures by Disney: "When Disney first announced they were venturing into the world of escorted tours I had a hard time imagining how Mickey was going to fit down the aisle of a bus! Turns out that isn't a problem because there is nary a character to be seen on these tours. And yes, that's a GOOD thing! Disney has proven over the last few years that they CAN compete with the best when it comes to doing guided tours all over the world. They use the very best hotels and restaurants, their guides are fabulously trained, and each itinerary makes sure that all participants will do not only the usual 'tourist' things, but also some things you'd otherwise not be able to do. (When the name Disney is attached to your company you can really work some magic!) And don't be surprised to see little gifts unexpected appearing in your room from time to time. As you'd imagine, these tours are great for families with children, and especially so for multi-generational families. There are opportunities for the adults to have a nice dinner alone while the kids are expertly entertained for the evening, and there are activities specially planned for the kids so they don't get bored while Grandma and Grandpa tour the Louvre or attend a wine tasting. They even keep the kids happy on the bus rides! Amazingly, though, the tours are equally good for adults traveling without children, but if you're still worried about that then you can sign up for one of the many "adults only" departures offered on many itineraries. You all know how much I love Disney World and Disney Cruise Line, but let's face it... Sometimes even the biggest Mouse fans need to do a character-free vacation. What's great about Adventures by Disney is that you get all the attention to detail that Disney is known for, and they somehow manage to make their mark on every aspect of the trip despite the lack of large furry beasts and pretty girls in big dresses. I am so supportive of this new endeavor that I've told my sales rep that I'm aiming to be their top agent for 2009. To that end, I've acquired a domain name for a new website and am currently working on a site that will be JUST for Adventures by Disney. In the meantime, we're trying to develop a number of promotions to run starting this fall that will be geared towards Affordable Disney readers and their friends and families. This is the PERFECT time to be planning your 2009 vacation, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to drop me a note!" Note from John: Affordable Disney members can find Beth's contact info on the welcome page - that's the page you're on when you log in.
As "Year of a Million Dreams" Continues, Disney Park Changes Name; New Supporting Cast of Attractions Set to Debut LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Change and constancy are both on the calendar at Walt Disney World Resort in the new year. While the popular "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration continues for another year, the Disney park that celebrates Hollywood and show business is keeping its theme but changing its name and one of the park's hit shows is keeping its name but otherwise changing: # Happy 2008 and hello Disney's Hollywood Studios. Renamed from Disney-MGM Studios, the new moniker better reflects not only the Golden Age of Tinseltown but all that today's Hollywood has to offer -- in movies, music, theater and television. # In February, "Playhouse Disney--Live on Stage!" one of the park's hit shows, will "re-debut" featuring a new cast of characters and whole new storyline. Hugely popular with young children -- who are on their feet singing, clapping and dancing during performances -- the show now will be based on stars from "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Little Einsteins," "Handy Manny" and more. The new edition of "Playhouse Disney--Live on Stage!" is the first of several major entertainment offerings bowing at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2008. In the spring, a whole new parade experience, "Block Party Bash," will make its Florida premier, and the greatly anticipated attraction Toy Story Mania! will follow in the summer. Disney's Animal Kingdom Serves up Two New Dining Experiences LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- From a bamboo steamer basket of dim sum to crispy honey chicken and seared miso salmon, Asian favorites are on the menu at the new Yak & Yeti Restaurant in the land of Asia at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Across the park in Africa, Tusker House is reopened as an all-you-care-to-eat restaurant, with more than a dozen "cooking stations" with African-inspired cuisine. There are eclectic antiques and artifacts including embellished doorways, elaborate statues of ancient gods and goddesses and an intricately carved wooden staircase that was made in India and reassembled at Walt Disney World Resort. Menu items range from $5 for appetizers to $23 for Shaoxing steak and shrimp. A full-service bar includes five varieties of chilled sake; beers from India, Thailand, Singapore, China and Japan, and wines. The restaurant's specialty, the Yak Attack, is a blend of frozen mango, rum and berries. Guests in a hurry can eat at the adjacent quick-service restaurant, with outdoor seating for 350. A limited menu includes sweet-and-sour pork, crispy honey chicken, fried rice, egg rolls and other Asian favorites. At Tusker House, mornings feature Donald's Safari Breakfast with Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Mickey. For lunch and dinner, the diverse menus feature seafood; carved meats and pork loin, and an array of interesting tastes such as chutneys, hummus, spiced tandoori tofu, couscous salad and basmati rice. More than a dozen South African wines are featured, many by the glass. The children's menu includes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chicken drumsticks and mashed potatoes. (Source: Press Release)
Disney's Pirate and Princess Party Offers Perfect Blend of Rowdy and Regal Merriment LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Enter a wonderland of enchanting princesses and swashbuckling adventurers during Disney's Pirate and Princess Party, which returns to Magic Kingdom on nine magical nights in January and February 2008. The fun begins at 7 p.m. (after regular theme park hours) and continues until midnight on Jan. 21, 26, 29 and Feb. 2, 5, 9, 14, 22, 26. A treasure map leads feisty buccaneers and pretty princesses on a trek through Magic Kingdom seeking chocolate treasures, colorful beads and encounters with favorite Disney characters. Youngsters can explore themed pirate coves and princess courts overflowing with special entertainment and dance parties, plus favorite attractions are open throughout the evening. Centerpiece of the event is the "Enchanted Adventures Parade," a colorful cavalcade starring a 39-foot pirate ship with swinging and sword-fighting mates. And perched high on the gold-filled treasure chest is Tinker Bell herself guarding the goods from Captain Hook and the larger-than-life crocodile -- Tick Tock -- that angrily snaps and slithers along the route. Disney maidens and princes, knights on horseback, regal dancers and the Jolly Rogers flag corps make fairytales come alive in the nightly spectacle. The night is capped with the dazzling "Magic, Music, and Mayhem" fireworks spectacular orchestrated to an original musical score with memorable pirate and princess melodies. Tickets are $45.95 plus tax for ages 10/up and $39.95 plus tax for ages 3-9. Call WDW-AHOY or visit disneyworld.com/pirateandprincess for special offers. (Source: Press Release)

Magical Journey Begins for 100 High School Students Headed to Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Walt Disney World Resort will open the doors of the magic behind Disney to 100 creative and imaginative teens during the first-ever Disney's Dreamers Academy Jan. 17-20. High school students from New York to New Orleans, from Compton, Calif., to Wichita, Kan. -- that is, from all across the United States -- have been selected to participate in the enrichment program that will immerse the students in creative and non-conventional career opportunities during "The Year of a Million Dreams." Disney worked with nationally syndicated radio personality Steve Harvey to create this innovative program. "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" conducted the Dreamer's Contest to identify the participants -- high school students who show promise but may need a little motivation. However, all of the selected students share a trait: the power to DREAM. Parents, teachers, school administrators, church groups and even the students themselves nominated more than 3,000 aspiring dreamers from across the nation for the program. The participants were selected by a distinguished panel of judges. During Disney's Dreamers Academy, young dreamers will have unprecedented access to the magic behind Walt Disney World Resort. Students will participate in interactive workshops focusing on a variety of subjects including Walt Disney World Imagineering techniques, entertainment, the business of sports, culinary arts, and more. Disney cast members, executives and celebrities like actress Monique Coleman will share their blueprints for success. And the lucky participants will explore Disney's theme parks before a graduation ceremony where a special guest will deliver a motivational address. (Source: Press Release)

"As a kid," continued Mobley, "I remember spending Sundays at church and how the music moved us all. It was electrifying. I remember Sam Cooke, Al Green, The Mighty Clouds of Joy ... They were entertainers who brought us music with a message that had its roots in the church. We rocked to their music, but we learned life lessons too. Our community, and our country, needs more positive messages. Gospel -- a genre that has transcended all limitations -- is the perfect vehicle to bring us the messages that lift us higher. The GOSPEL IDOL competition will bring the artists and the music to the world stage." "We are receiving entries from gospel performers from all over the world. We will select from among all entries received. I suggest that all performers looking for their time to shine, get us their entry as quickly as possible," stated Benjamin. The competition will be decided through a combination of expert judging and audience voting. The winning groups will appear on The Family Digest TV Show and in Family Digest Magazine, and receive other valuable prizes and awards. If you are in a gospel group or choir or you are a gospel singer, or if you know of a good group, choir or singer at your church or elsewhere -- this could be your or their big chance. Make sure you get every gospel group and choir you know to enter now by going online to http://www.FamilyDigestShow.com and clicking on the GOSPEL IDOL banner, located on the right side of the page, for more information. Entries are limited, so early sign-up is suggested. (Source: Press Release, 02/21/07) |

Having hosted the opening of several national tours, including Disneys The Lion King in 2002, The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is poised to make local theatre history. We have enjoyed terrific theatrical engagements in Denver through the years, and so it makes perfect sense to work on our new musical here and have Denver become a part of our process. Based on the Academy® Award-winning animated film and the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid is the story of a young mermaid named Ariel who longs to leave her fathers underwater kingdom and be where the people are, a fathers struggle with his strong-willed daughters attempts to grow up too soon, a sea witch conspiring to settle a score and a prince looking for the girl with the perfect voice. With a score composed by eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken and his late partner Howard Ashman, The Little Mermaid will feature the classic songs Part of Your World, Kiss the Girl and the Academy Award-winning Best Original Song, Under the Sea, as well as nine new songs by Menken and lyricist Glen Slater. In addition to the three debut images, Disney Parks has commissioned more images by Leibovitz that will feature other celebrities in classic, Disney fairy tale settings. First 'Year of a Million Dreams' Guests to Find 'Suite Dreams' As Disney's Cinderella Castle Opens for Overnight Stays LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- A Michigan family has made history as the first Walt Disney World guests to win a night's stay inside Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom Park as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway. The Fouch (pronounced like "couch") family of DeWitt, a small town near state capital Lansing, gained the key to the brand new Cinderella Castle Suite Thursday during "The Year of a Million Dreams," a Disney spectacular celebrating the dreams of guests at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California. Jim and Lisa Fouch and their children, Brad and Hannah, were to spend Thursday night in the regal dwelling place - the world's most exclusive resort, with only one room available and no reservations accepted - through the Disney Dreams Giveaway, which awards extra-special dreams through a totally random process. Now, nearly every night for the remainder of 2007, another eligible lucky guest will win a similar stay. Like the Fouch family, they'll be honored in a special ceremony, dine at Cinderella's Royal Table restaurant, and bed down for the night amid the splendor of Cinderella Castle Suite some four stories above the surrounding Magic Kingdom - a salon, bedchamber and bathroom off of a private marble-floored foyer, all replete with rich details. The Suite was created from unused space within the Magic Kingdom landmark once envisioned as in-park living quarters for members of the Disney family. The Fouches became the recipients of the opportunity to become honorary Disney royalty for a day and night because 16-year-old Brad Fouch was sitting in seat eight in the second row of Simulator 4 of the Disney-MGM Studios' Star Tours attraction at 9:50 a.m. Thursday. That was the randomly selected location and time determined by the Disney Dreams Giveaway computer to award the Cinderella Castle stay. "I was thinking I had the bad seat because I was sitting on the end," Brad said. "It's like a dream," Lisa exclaimed. Hannah added, "This is a dream come true!" And indeed, for Hannah, who was celebrating her eighth birthday Thursday, it was. Before the vacation to Walt Disney World Resort, she had seen a Disney commercial in which Cinderella dances with a little "princess" and told her mom, "That's what I want to do!" Winning the night in Cinderella Castle Suite marked the second bit of good fortune Thursday for the Fouch family. As they entered Star Tours, they won Dream FASTPASS badges that would allow them to bypass standby queues at a variety of Disney-MGM Studios attractions and shows during the day. "I never win anything!" Lisa Fouch said afterward. "Mom, you can never say that again," Brad responded. (Source: Press Release, 01/25/07)

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts New Years Press Release After a momentous 2006, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is poised to unveil a full slate of exciting new attractions and entertainment in the coming year, highlighted by the continued rollout around the world of its groundbreaking Where Dreams Come True initiative. "As proud as we are of all that we accomplished in the last year, particularly with the great, global success of Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration, we have even more exciting things in store for 2007 and beyond," said Jay Rasulo, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "In addition to making dreams come true for our guests around the world, 2007 will be a year in which we continue to invest in our business by adding world-class attractions and entertainment that tell great stories - especially those based on some of Disney's great creative franchises." "We'll also continue to look for new areas with which we can grow our business and expand our share of the global travel market," Rasulo added. "We think there are incredible opportunities for us on this front, and we're eager to bring the Disney vacation experience to new audiences and places around the world, much like we've done with one of our newest businesses, Adventures by Disney." Where Dreams Come True In October, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts - a part of The Walt Disney Company - launched Where Dreams Come True, the first-ever initiative to fully integrate and encompass Disney's entire worldwide portfolio of parks and resorts. The campaign is anchored in the principle that families everywhere, regardless of boundaries or culture, share the belief that Disney parks are a magical escape where they can experience a world of fantasy and imagination. "Our Dreams initiative brings that belief to life," Rasulo said, "through attractions, entertainment, and, most importantly, Disney cast members, who are raising our already high levels of guest service to even greater heights." Dreams also serves as the long-term unifying theme for products and services at each park around the world. Under the Dreams umbrella, each international Disney resort will present specially tailored celebratory themes in 2007, such as the 15th anniversary of Disneyland Resort Paris, the start of the celebration of Tokyo Disney Resort's 25th anniversary, and the continued introduction of the Disney experience to a new region of the world at Hong Kong Disneyland. In the U.S., Dreams has come to life under the banner of The Year of a Million Dreams - a celebration of Disney guests and the way their dreams come true at Disney's parks and resorts. Since The Year of a Million Dreams began in October, cast members have made more than 200,000 dreams come true for guests at the Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts. Experiences Only Disney Can Provide Randomly awarded, these dreams include such "money can't buy" experiences as a Dream FASTPASS badge with unique access to some of Disney's most popular attractions; private meetings with favorite Disney characters; shopping sprees; and a variety of unique Disney vacation experiences, including the chance to spend the night in a special suite inside Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World or in the Mickey Mouse Penthouse at the Disneyland Hotel. "Our cast members are playing a central role during The Year of a Million Dreams," Rasulo said. "They're helping make our guests' dreams come true and they're delivering extraordinary guest service, which is really at the heart of what we do and who we are as Walt Disney Parks and Resorts." Leveraging Creative Franchises In addition to a strong focus on guest service, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will unveil a full slate of exciting new attractions, entertainment shows and experiences in 2007, demonstrating its commitment to continually invest in its business. Many of these new attractions - such as the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at the Disneyland Resort, or the Cars Quatre Roues Rallye at the Disneyland Resort Paris - feature stories and characters that have become key creative franchises for all of The Walt Disney Company. "Whether it's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' or 'Finding Nemo' or 'Toy Story,' Disney parks and resorts are truly where we make these great stories - stories that are known and loved around the world - come to life," Rasulo said. "And now, we're able to use cutting-edge technology to make these stories even more magical, exciting and memorable for our guests." Enhanced with Technology For instance, thanks to proprietary, state-of-the-art, computer-animation technology, guests on the new Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage (due to open at the Disneyland Resort in June) will be able to look out through the submarine's portholes to see Nemo and his animated friends swimming and interacting nearby - with guests seeing the scenes as though they were on a magical underwater voyage through the film. Sophisticated computer-animation technology will also bring to life Mike Wazowski and his friends at the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club, which opens at the Walt Disney World Resort in spring 2007. Guests will be able to laugh, joke and match wits with the Monsters, Inc. characters in real time, and guests will even be able to text-message jokes backstage for possible use in the show. "At the heart of all our entertainment is great storytelling," said Rasulo. "Yet we're always looking for new tools, and new technologies, to enhance the way we tell these stories - and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage and Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club are two wonderful examples." In the coming year, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will also continue to roll out technologies and tools to help guests make their vacations with Disney more personalized and customized. For instance, at the new DisneyParks.com website, an online feature helps guests customize their vacations with specific styles of entertainment. The site then generates a personalized map that guides guests to their priority activities once they arrive at a Disney park, with special tips for personalized fun. Another feature of the DisneyParks.com website is a customizable "widget" that can be downloaded to a desktop computer. The widget functions as an interactive message center - providing information about new attractions and events at Disney parks, custom messages for annual passholders, and vacation planning tips and tools. Magic in New Places Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will also continue to expand its signature brand of family entertainment to new corners of the global vacation market in 2007. This summer, the Disney Cruise Line will set sail for Europe to offer its first-ever Mediterranean itineraries. This spring, Adventures by Disney - Disney's guided group vacation program - will launch a greatly expanded list of itineraries for 2007, with new adventures planned for many more cities in Europe and new cities in the U.S. And in late 2007, the Disney Vacation Club will open the first phase of its eighth resort at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge at the Walt Disney World Resort. "We are excited about what the future holds for us," said Rasulo. "From new attractions and entertainment, to bringing the Disney experience to new corners of the globe, to new storytelling horizons and technologies, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and its cast members will continue to make dreams come true for people all over the world in 2007 and beyond." In an Amazing New Attraction, Walt Disney World Guests Can Find Nemo and Friends Under the Sea at a Newly Re-launched Epcot Pavilion LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- As an encore to the Disney-Pixar blockbuster film "Finding Nemo," Nemo the clownfish and his motion picture family and friends make a big splash in an eye-filling new attraction at Epcot. "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" attraction brings the familiar characters to life, anchoring the newly renamed and re-launched The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion (formerly The Living Seas) in Epcot Future World. A whimsical and visually stunning attraction for Walt Disney World guests of all ages, "The Seas with Nemo & Friends" attraction picks up where the motion picture "Finding Nemo" left off. The attraction features technology that magically enables the stars of the motion picture to swim amid the marine life in the pavilion's 5.7-million-gallon saltwater environment. " 'Finding Nemo' is such a compelling movie with endearing characters and a great story line, and it translates so well in this new attraction," said Kathy Mangum, vice president and executive producer with Walt Disney Imagineering. The underwater adventure begins when guests approach the pavilion and see a striking new façade that features colorful appliqués of fish and sea creatures. Three Audio-Animatronics seagulls are perched on the rocks outside the pavilion, occasionally squawking "Mine, Mine, Mine," just like in the film. Inside the pavilion guests enter a queue area styled to look like a beach -- complete with sand dunes, sea oats and the sound of cawing gulls and crashing waves. As guests dive deeper into the experience, they find themselves under the sea, looking up at the water's surface and the hull of a boat. The immersion is complete as guests board "clamobiles" for an undersea voyage in a colorful world of coral and amazing animation (the attraction is fully accessible). The vivid coral in the first three of nine attraction scenes was created by Walt Disney Imagineers in three dimensions to meticulously recreate the beautiful undersea world that was designed by Pixar for the "Finding Nemo" animated film. Guests first meet Mr. Ray and his class on a field trip and soon learn that Nemo has wandered off. The journey in search of Nemo includes familiar characters such as Dory, Marlin, Bruce, Squirt and Crush. These deep-sea friends inhabit a variety of vibrant vignettes, including a garden of jellyfish, a bubble-filled underwater playground, the menacing domain of Bruce the shark and the totally cool East Australian current where Crush and Squirt -- father and son surfing-turtle dudes -- chill out. And guests should keep their eye on the threatening and agile anglerfish that chases Marlin. In the musical finale of the attraction, Nemo is happily reunited with his friends to the tune of a new song, "Big Blue World." Amazingly, the animated characters appear to be swimming among the real sea life in the actual aquarium containing more than 65 species of marine life. This final scene is an example of combining the creativity of Walt Disney Imagineering with new technology and collaboration with Pixar to create the visually stunning, animation projection effect. At the conclusion of the five-minute experience, guests exit into The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion which has been newly renamed and re-launched. Other innovative and engaging areas of the revamped pavilion include: * "Turtle Talk With Crush" featuring the laid-back sea turtle from the "Finding Nemo" movie, who laughs and interacts with guests in live, unscripted conversations. From his digital world under the sea, Crush chats, plays and jokes with guests in a personalized way. The 152-year-old turtle recognizes guests and asks them questions about themselves and the human world in the first-of-its-kind real-time animated show. * Bruce's Shark World, which features another familiar character from the film, is an interactive area with colorful graphics, fun facts about sharks and fun photo opportunities. A particularly precarious-looking photo can be snapped while smiling guests stand inside the toothy mouth of the menacing Bruce the shark. * Live marine life inhabits both the 5.7 million gallon aquarium -- one of the world's largest -- and various specialized exhibits. In all, more than 2,000 fish, sharks, rays and dolphins call the pavilion home. * Certified divers can experience Epcot DiveQuest, a program featuring explorations inside the pavilion's saltwater environment. For snorkelers, the Seas Aqua Tour provides an immersive plunge into the aquarium. To learn more about dolphins and research at the pavilion, guests can join Disney's Dolphins in Depth program. The new attraction opened as part of "The Year of a Million Dreams," a first-of-its-kind celebration on now with more than one million very special dreams granted to guests visiting Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts. Guests will find Disney cast members delivering an unprecedented level of guest service. The celebration also is highlighted by the debut of innovative Disney attractions and entertainment spectaculars at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts. SpectroMagic! LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Combine the energy of seven lightning bolts, the electrical power of a fleet of 2,000 highway trucks and a sprinkling of pixie-dust. Then turn down the lights in Magic Kingdom. It's showtime for the Walt Disney World nighttime wonder "SpectroMagic." Designed as a moving gallery for audiences along a darkened parade route, the show uses a techno-workshop full of lighting effects to re-create pixies and peacocks, sea horses and flying horses, flower gardens and fountains -- all the whimsical creatures and environments of Disney's worlds of wonder and fantasy. Some "SpectroMagic" highlights: * The Genie from Disney's "Aladdin" is the eccentric conductor of an orchestra producing a rainbow of music notes that flow into the air. * Practical Pig, poised before the magical world of Disney's characters (a parade segment more than 100 feet in length and featuring castle towers, a carousel, a bejeweled coach and other dreamlands), flicks a paint brush to change the colors of the characters' world into silvery white. * Chernabog, memorable for his role as the monstrous demon figure in "Fantasia," is portrayed in dark and eerie colors as he dramatically spreads his wings to a 38-foot span. * The Three Good Fairies in Sleeping Beauty's garden create the sparkle of day among the flowers and insects...and magically transform the scene to the mystery of night. "SpectroMagic" borrows from the prismatic holographic industry, military lighting developments, electro-luminescent and fiber-optic technologies, and tosses in light-spreading thermoplastics, clouds of underlit liquid-nitrogen smoke and good old-fashioned twinkle lights. The visual spectacle is choreographed to music produced for the show and presented over an array of 204 speakers with 72,000 watts of power. It is the Disney entertainment wizards' 21st century show to rival the charm and splendor of the "Main Street Electrical Parade," which ended an encore engagement in March 2001. "SpectroMagic" is presented on select evenings at Magic Kingdom. Mickey Mouse in glistening lights with "a confetti of light" sparkling in the air around him heralds the 20-minute production. Dressed in an amber and purple grand magician's cape, he plays the role of a light-controller capable of altering colors, brilliance and types of lighting effects. Title float, proclaiming "SpectroMagic" in flowing fiber optics, is surrounded by SpectroMen atop spinning, darting whirlyballs. Effect is a ball of energy, alive with blue and purple mini-lights and twinkle lights. SpectroMen are robed in rope lights (points of light inside transparent ropes), mini-lights, fiber optics and twinkle lights. Electro-luminescent panels make dragonfly wings as bright as day and costumes enchanting. Project lighting designer John Haupt is aglow as he talks about the "SpectroMagic" "confetti of light effect" that uses xenon flashlights and mirror balls. "It produces six-million-beam candlepower," he says. "With a normal flashlight, you MIGHT have 125 candlepower. It is so brilliant you may actually see little beams of light glancing through the air -- thousands of them -- like when sun rays come through the clouds." The effect showers the air with color at the beginning and end of "SpectroMagic." Banks of deep-cycle batteries -- 75 tons of them -- provide the awesome power to light and move "SpectroMagic" through Magic Kingdom. The battery supply is equivalent to that of a fleet of 2,000 trucks. Approximately 100 miles of fiber-optic cables and threads become conduits for shimmering lights that create everything from the strands of "hair" on King Triton's beard . . . to giant, four-foot hibiscus blooms and three-foot daisy petals. Some 600,000 miniature lights chase in wild patterns, moving in perfect concert with sound effects and music. Goofy's xylophone keys dance with light at his touch. Mickey's cape transforms in a 24-step cascade of color sweeping from shoulder height to the base of the float and upward to 17 feet above his head. It's a "first" for a float, accomplished through a custom computer. In fact, "SpectroMagic" is a marvel of the computer age. For lighting alone, approximately 30 mini-computers are utilized. Audio is stored digitally on state-of-the-art micro-chips. A sequence of electronic triggers activates the visual effects and audio effects, and electronic cross-references synchronize the show. And with all those batteries, "SpectroMagic" just keeps on going . . . and going . . . and going -- at night in Magic Kingdom. (Source: WDW Press Release)
New Policy to Associate Disney Brands and Characters with a More Nutritionally Balanced Range of Foods BURBANK, Calif., October 16, 2006 -- The Walt Disney Company today introduced new food guidelines aimed at giving parents and children healthier eating options. The guidelines for licensed foods and promotions aimed at children will govern Disney's business partnerships and activities in the U.S. on a going-forward basis and will be adapted internationally over the next several years. The new policies call for Disney to use its name and characters only on kid-focused products that meet specific guidelines, including limits on calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar. Disney also announced nutritionally-beneficial changes in the meals served to children at all Disney-operated restaurants in its Parks and Resorts and unveiled a company-wide plan to eliminate added trans fats from food served at its Parks by the end of 2007 and from its licensed and promotional products by the end of 2008. "Disney will be providing healthier options for families that seek them, whether at our Parks or through our broad array of licensed foods," said Disney President and CEO Robert Iger. "The Disney brand and characters are in a unique position to market food that kids will want and parents will feel good about giving them." The guidelines are based on The Dietary Guidelines for Americans and have been developed in cooperation with two top child health and wellness experts, Dr. James O. Hill, Director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and Dr. Keith Thomas Ayoob, Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Specifically, the guidelines governing kid-focused licensed foods call for limits such as the following: A cap on calories that results in appropriate kid-sized portions. Total fat will not exceed 30 percent of calories for main and side dishes and 35 percent for snacks. Saturated fat will not exceed 10 percent of calories for main dishes, side dishes and snacks. Added sugar will not exceed 10 percent of calories for main dishes and side dishes and 25 percent of calories for snacks. Disney will continue to license special-occasion sweets such as birthday cakes and seasonal candy as part of its product range but will limit the number of indulgence items in its licensed portfolio to 15 percent by 2010. In addition, most special-occasion sweets will be available in single-serving packets. "By developing nutrition guidelines for children, Disney is demonstrating a long-term commitment to the health of kids," said Dr. Hill. "The guidelines are comprehensive and consistent with The Dietary Guidelines for Americans," that are issued by the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services. "This is some of the best news I have heard in over twenty years of working with families and children as a pediatric nutritionist," added Dr. Ayoob. "Disney is synonymous with fun and can play an important role in getting kids to consume a more balanced diet." Disney's timetable for implementing its new policies is dictated by existing contractual arrangements, the majority of which will lapse in their current form within two years. Disney expects most of its licensed products and promotional tie-ins to meet the new guidelines by the end of 2008. Disney Consumer Products has already begun to offer many licensed products which comply with the guidelines. They include breakfast items such as instant oatmeal featuring characters like "The Incredibles" and "Kim Possible," and Disney Garden fresh produce such as kid-sized apples and bananas. Lunch and dinner foods such as Mickey-shaped organic ravioli and other pastas are also now available. "Families are shopping together more often and we see an opportunity to give parents food choices they can approve of while at the same time satisfying their kids," said Andy Mooney, chairman of Disney Consumer Products. Beginning this month in U.S. Disney Parks and Resorts, kids' meals are automatically being served with low fat milk, 100 percent fruit juice or water along with side dishes like apple sauce or carrots in place of the traditional soft drinks and French fries. Parents will still be able to substitute French fries and soda at no additional cost. Initial tests involving 20,000 kids' meals show that as many as 90 percent of parents and kids stayed with the more nutritious option. "This is a terrific initiative because it makes it easier for parents, even while on vacation, to offer their children well balanced meals with kid appeal," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Added trans fats are in the process of being removed from all Disney food offerings. Food served at the U.S. Disney Parks and Resorts will be free of added trans fats by the end of 2007. Disney's U.S. licensing and promotional groups are aiming to meet an end-2008 deadline. "These are just first steps in an initiative that will evolve over time," said Iger. "But we understand the challenges faced by parents and recognize Disney can contribute to the solution." (Source: Disney Press Release)
Costumers Weave Magic in Fabric at Walt Disney World Resort LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Since Disneyland opened in 1955, costumes have played an integral role in creating the vivid worlds of fantasy that exist at Disney's theme parks around the globe. At Walt Disney World Resort, tens of thousands of cast members work "on stage" in thousands of different costume styles -- from the rustic ranchers at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground to the spooky bellhops at The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. When Walt Disney Imagineers set out to refurbish a classic Disney attraction that has entertained millions of Magic Kingdom guests since it debuted in 1971, the goal was to restore "it's a small world" to its opening-day luster while incorporating whimsical touches from its inspiration at Disneyland. For the seven cast members that comprise the Magic Kingdom Creative Costuming Department, that meant meticulously inspecting the 2,296 culturally specific garment pieces worn by the attraction's 289 miniature figures representing children around the world. When the nearly yearlong project was complete, each of the singing figures had received a new costume element. For some, it was a new pair of tiny shoes; for others, it was an entirely new outfit created to match the original specifications. In the Europe portion of the Walt Disney World attraction, a dancing boy representing Spain has been replaced with a female flamenco dancer clad in a ruffled red polka-dot dress made of fabric shipped from France. Elsewhere, the boat ride's Asia section once included two bowing Japanese boys that have been replaced with a Japanese boy and girl each dressed in traditional costumes rich with silk taffeta and brocade. Fun Facts * Walt Disney World Costuming is the world's largest working wardrobe. * More than 1,100 Costuming and Cosmetology cast members work at Walt Disney World Resort, including more than 140 seamstresses. * Costuming and Cosmetology cast members hail from more than 30 countries around the globe, with more than 30 languages and dialects spoken among the diverse staff. * The Costuming team provides outfits for more than 40,000 cast members at the Florida resort, with more than 3,500 different costume styles in use. * Thirty-two separate costume-issue facilities exist at Walt Disney World Resort. * The Costuming team maintains 103,500 square feet of storage for all garments worn by cast at Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Vacation Club resorts at Hilton Head, S.C., and Vero Beach, Fla., and the World of Disney retail store in New York City. * More than 400,000 yards of fabric exist in inventory -- nearly enough to stretch from Walt Disney World Resort to Miami. * The buttons used in costuming workrooms -- if stacked -- would equal 96 towers as high as the 189-foot-tall Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom. * Textile Services at Walt Disney World Resort sorts, cleans, hangs and redistributes an average of 31,000 garments per day. Canada Pavilion at Walt Disney World LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Hotel du Canada is a towering landmark that leads guests to the Canada pavilion at Epcot World Showcase. The distinctive building, modeled after Ottawa's familiar Chateau Laurier, also boasts a Rocky Mountain and waterfall backdrop. Near the entrance to the pavilion, guests are often seen snapping photos in the brilliant flower gardens, inspired by Victoria's Butchart Gardens. The Canada pavilion is a mixture of rustic Native Indian villages, an ornate French-flavored chateau, the Scottish influence of the Maritimes and the ruggedness of the Canadian Rockies. It combines authentic architectural designs, and features 30-foot totem poles which mark the Native Indian village where a log cabin and its nearby northwest trading post carry out the northwoods theme. Gift shops display authentic Canadian crafts, boutique items and a Roots clothing store. The flowered pathway leads into a mountain canyon where a 30-foot waterfall cascades into a rushing stream. Rocky, pine-studded slopes surround the shaft opening to Maple Leaf Mine, the entrance to the theater. "O Canada" is a splendid visual tour of Canada's scenic wonders. The CircleVision 360 film is a motion picture technique that surrounds viewers with Canadian snow geese by the thousands on an autumn stopover near the St. Lawrence River; a chuckwagon race in the Calgary Stampede (filmed from the buckboard); pine-covered mountains at Banff National Park; reindeer in the Northwest Territories; Toronto's CN Tower; and the northern midnight sun. Le Cellier Steakhouse is located in a chateau wine cellar that celebrates the Canadian provinces and territories, featuring the flavors of Midwestern seasoned steaks and seasonal Canadian seafood paired with wines and beers of Canada, the border states and Europe. The showcase introduces visitors to the traditions, culture and atmosphere of the places that are most attractive to tourists in Canada. Off Kilter, a Celtic rock band, entertains live at the Canada outdoor stage on the promenade. Many young people from Canada work in the pavilion and help to explain their country to the world. Those included are students participating in the World Showcase fellowship ambassador program who study management and the hospitality industry under the direction of Disney professionals. These and others brought to Walt Disney World Resort through a unique cultural program are replaced by a new group of "ambassadors" each year. (Source: WDW Press Release)
Magical Makeover Transforming Cinderella Castle For Suite Dreams Beginning in Late January 2007 LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- For decades, Walt Disney World guests have dreamed of spending the night in Cinderella Castle -- a night when, as the clock strikes 12, the magic doesn't end. And during "The Year of a Million Dreams," a 15-month celebration, the dream will finally come true for lucky guests following a magical transformation within the Magic Kingdom landmark. Unused space originally envisioned as in-park accommodations for the Disney family is being transformed into Cinderella Castle Suite -- a place where lucky Walt Disney World guests will spend a dream-come-true night beginning in late January 2007. Eligible guests will be selected as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway, which began Oct. 1, 2006. For the castle stay, a Walt Disney World guest at a park or Downtown Disney will be selected randomly by early in the afternoon most days beginning in late January. The guest and up to five members of their party will begin their dream-come-true night that evening at Cinderella's Royal Table, the popular restaurant located in Cinderella Castle. (Because the Castle stay requires same-day use, mail-in winners will be awarded a prize of equal value.) After the rest of the Magic Kingdom guests have headed home, these lucky guests can keep the castle lights burning brightly well into the night, wrapping themselves in the cozy comforts of their dream suite -- a salon, bedchamber and bathroom off of a private marble-floored lobby some four stories above the surrounding Magic Kingdom, replete with rich details befitting the 17th century fairytale and the French chateaus that inspired the design of Cinderella Castle: Fluffy feather comforters beneath the regal canopy draping of two queen beds ... A cut-stone bedchamber floor inspired by the mosaic art masterpiece that adorns the castle's breezeway entrance to Fantasyland ... A bedchamber ceiling that twinkles with stars and fills wondering eyes with illusions of pixie dust ... A sofa that invites kicking off the shoes and curling up to read a chapter beneath a vaulted ceiling of the salon ... Rich, wood-paneled walls, stained-glass windows, and glimpses of the familiar gray castle stone. While the idea of having living quarters inside Cinderella Castle dates to the time when Walt Disney World Resort was being planned, until now the space has been a backstage area -- essentially a blank canvas for a creative team from Walt Disney Imagineering. In the fashion of a Disney attraction, Cinderella Castle Suite is emerging regally from their meticulous research and design skills. "The architecture of the castle, the Cinderella story and the suite are all interwoven," said Stephen Silvestri, the Walt Disney Imagineering show producer/director who is leading a team of designers and craftsmen in the dream makeover. "We want our guests to feel as though they are inside our castle but also immersed within the fantasy realm of the Cinderella story." In the lobby of the suite, guests will discover a design of the fairytale pumpkin coach in the marble floor inlay. A memorable artifact from the story -- perhaps the famous glass slipper -- will adorn a cove. And through the doorway, the bedchamber and salon are appointed with furnishings in the style of the era of "the Louies," as Silvestri refers to the French rulers of the period inspiring the castle and Cinderella story. Nooks showcase sculpted pieces, clocks and porcelain all befitting the period. Doors are richly detailed; the walls are covered with wood panels and wall coverings. In the bathroom, hand-decorated copper basins sit atop the vanity, recalling a time when fresh water was carried to the bedchamber. Despite all the careful attention to centuries-old details, the amenities of the Cinderella Castle Suite are definitely 21st century. There's a lavish garden tub plus a shower. The elevator, the bathroom and everything in between are wheelchair accessible. As for a 17th-century-style painting above a regal fireplace: it frames a modern 21st-century flat-screen television. "We want to balance the practical realities within the fantasy place to make the experience truly a dream-come-true for our guests," Silvestri said. (Source: WDW Press Release)
"Finding Nemo," "Monsters, Inc." Inspire Coming Attractions At Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resorts BURBANK, Calif. -- The stories and stars of the blockbuster Disney(Pixar motion pictures "Finding Nemo" and "Monsters, Inc." are the inspiration for four new attractions and shows coming to Disney parks at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort during "The Year of a Million Dreams." In addition, Mickey Mouse and some of his Disney character pals are starring in a new Magic Kingdom stage show at Walt Disney World Resort, and two popular Disneyland Resort attractions are undergoing rockin' transformations. The debuts began October 2006 and continue into summer 2007 as part of a first-of-its-kind event celebrating the dreams of Disney guests and the role that Disney cast members play in making Disney parks places where dreams come true. Here's a closer look at what's in store. "The Seas with Nemo & Friends," a whimsical and visually stunning attraction for guests of all ages, bows at Walt Disney World Resort in fall 2006, anchoring the newly renamed and re-launched The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion in Epcot. Picking up where the motion picture "Finding Nemo" left off, the ride-through attraction in a colorful coral reef setting features technology that causes the stars of the motion picture to magically appear swimming amid the live marine life of a 5.7-million-gallon saltwater environment -- one of the largest such aquariums in the world. Guests aboard "clam-mobiles" first meet Mr. Ray and his class on a field trip and soon learn that Nemo has wandered off. The journey in search of Nemo includes familiar characters such as Dory, Bruce, Marlin, Squirt and Crush. These deep-sea friends inhabit a variety of vibrant vignettes, including the actual aquarium containing more than 65 species of marine life. In the musical finale, Nemo is happily reunited with his class and friends. The Future World pavilion The Seas with Nemo & Friends is an imaginative mix of fantasy with real sea life and interactive experiences such as the breakthrough "Turtle Talk With Crush." "Finding Nemo-The Musical," premiering at Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in late 2006, brings the undersea world of the film "Finding Nemo" to life in a whole new way: as an all-new Broadway-caliber musical stage show featuring original songs by Tony Award-winning "Avenue Q" co-composer-creator Robert Lopez and a cappella musical "Along the Way" composer Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The show will immerse guests of all ages in the story of Marlin and Nemo, an overprotective clownfish father and his curious son, through a dazzling production that combines puppets, dancers, aerialists and animated backdrops. The theme park's newly enclosed Theater in the Wild will become a magical undersea environment through innovative lighting, sound, special effects and the theatrical puppetry of Michael Curry, who co-designed the richly detailed character puppets seen in the Broadway version of Disney's "The Lion King." Principal characters such as Marlin, Nemo and Dory will be represented by live performers operating larger-than-life puppets. Peripheral characters will be realized by a diverse array of puppetry styles, including rod, Bunraku and shadow. Produced by Disney Creative Entertainment, the 30-minute show represents the first time Disney has taken a non-musical animated feature and transformed it into an original musical production. "Finding Nemo-The Musical" will be staged several times daily. "Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club," opening in mid to late January in Magic Kingdom, is an immersive and interactive attraction in which guests can laugh, joke, match wits and laugh some more with comedian wannabes recruited by Mike Wazowski, the one-eyed hero from Disney/Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." Guests can even text-message jokes on their cell phones for possible use in the show. Mike, realizing laughter is many times more powerful than screams as a power source, has opened the comedy club to collect laughs that will generate electricity for the monster world of Monstropolis. The fun reigns at a 400-seat theater in Tomorrowland. "Dream Along with Mickey," premiering Oct. 1 in Magic Kingdom, is a live stage show about a dream-inspired party to which Mickey Mouse and the gang have invited almost everyone. Theme park guests are invited to gather near the Cinderella Castle stage and join in the fun that takes place several times daily. And many favorite Disney character friends join the party as the dreams of "happily ever after" and "adventurous exploits" come alive on stage amid music and dancing. But there's a party-crasher -- Maleficent, the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty. She drops by with the intention of turning all the dreams into nightmares. Collectively, however, all the party guests prove that believing in your dreams is stronger than Maleficent's sorcery ... and the 20-minute show has a dream-fulfilling, happy ending.
Disney Announces Walt Disney World Resort Peace of Mind Tropical Weather Policy: Fees Waived for Cancellations as well as Re-bookings Disney Destinations and Walt Disney Travel Co. have announced a new policy providing greater flexibility to modify or cancel Walt Disney World Resort advance reservations in the event of a hurricane warning -- and it represents a bit of financial sunshine. During the 2006 hurricane season, in the event a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area or for the guest's place of residence within 7 days before the scheduled arrival date, the guest may call in advance to reschedule or cancel their Walt Disney Travel Co. Magic Your Way vacation package without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney. This policy also applies to most Walt Disney World Resort room-only reservations booked directly with Disney, as well as reservations at Disney's Vero Beach Resort or Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort in the event a hurricane warning is issued for those destinations. When the guest reschedules, all deposited monies for rooms, park tickets, Disney dining plans and other Disney products and services will be applied toward the rescheduled vacation. Guests who have purchased packages that include products and services provided by third party suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, car rental agencies or vacation insurance companies, will continue to be responsible for any non-refundable payments, as well as cancellation or change fees assessed by those suppliers. Any discounts or free offers applicable to the original vacation will not apply to the rescheduled vacation. Disney cannot guarantee availability of similar accommodations for the new travel dates. This policy does not apply to certain special events or dining experiences. For a complete description of the policy, visit http://www.disneyworld.com . "If a guest is impacted -- or is likely to be impacted -- by a hurricane, the last thing we want them to be worrying about is a Disney cancellation or change fee," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "With this policy, our guests don't have to worry about that. As for the weather, there have been only two days since 1971 when our parks haven't opened because of weather concerns." In fact, the period from mid-August through September can be one of the best times to visit Walt Disney World Resort. With school bells ringing, it's after the height of the summer vacation season. That means shorter lines. It's also a time of special events, including Magical Beginnings events for families with preschoolers, the Tom Joyner Family Reunion hosted by popular radio and TV host Tom Joyner, the Night of Joy contemporary Christian music extravaganza, and the launch of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party dates. StormReady distinction Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort have been recognized by NOAA National Weather Service as StormReady communities, the only theme parks and resorts in the nation to achieve the distinction. To be recognized as StormReady, a community must establish an emergency operations center, have multiple means to receive severe weather information, monitor weather conditions and issue alerts, promote the importance of public readiness through education efforts, and develop a formal hazardous weather plan which includes emergency exercises. Guests will be able to customize their visit to a Disney park to pursue the "Dream Track" of their choice with on-line planning tools and in-park technology to help them become the hero or princess they've always dreamed of being. Conservation International & Disney Discover New Species In The 'Realm of the Yeti'
Scientists from Conservation International (CI) and Disney's Animal Kingdom
found a vast array of exotic wildlife -- including plant and animal species
previously unknown to science--during a two-month expedition to little-known
regions in the shadow of Mount Everest. The discoveries and observations
announced today, coincident with opening of the Expedition Everest attraction
at Walt Disney World Resort, included:
The scientific journey into the mountains of Southwest China and Nepal also included Walt Disney Imagineering representatives who researched cultural beliefs related to the legend of the Yeti, a creature whose traditional role as "protector of the sacred" has been integral to conservation in the region. Those beliefs inspired the story of Expedition Everest -- which includes selected findings from the two-month expedition as part of the experience. Additionally, Jeff Corwin, host of Corwin's Quest, documented the Nepal expedition for broadcast on a special edition of his show Corwin's Quest: Realm of the Yeti, premiering Saturday, April 15, from 8-10 PM (ET/PT) on Discovery's Animal Planet. "By weaving the scientific discoveries and cultural research into the storyline of Expedition Everest, park visitors are provided with a unique opportunity to learn about the environmental heritage of this region. The experience created by Disney is much more than just the physical thrills of a high-speed journey through the domain of the world's tallest mountain," said Dr. Russ Mittermeier, president of CI. "We are thrilled with Disney's dedication to conservation through their scientific and financial contributions to the expedition." Even though they faced rugged terrain and frigid temperatures not normally associated with new discoveries, the team of international and local scientists also documented a significant number of new, rare and endangered species - lending further proof to the importance of Tibetan 'Sacred Lands' as a source of environmental protection in the face of increasing population pressures. "The fact that we found so many new species in such a harsh environment, as well as documented several rare and endangered species, is good news for these two regions," said Dr. Leeanne Alonso, the lead scientist of the expedition and vice-president of CI's Rapid Assessment Program (RAP). "Local efforts by Tibetan communities through their 'Sacred Lands' are helping to prevent these plants and animals from going extinct and demonstrate that cultural values can play an important role in conservation."
Highlights of the new species discovered by the team of biologists, botanists
and other technical experts include:
Among the highlights of the rare and endangered species the team came across are the endangered Sichuan jumping mouse (Eozapus setchuanus); a katydid (Tettigonia chinensis) which has been seen only once since it was described in 1933; and two ancient plant species, including one that is an important source for cancer drugs (Taxus wallichiana). Adding an additional element of danger, the team was also forced to dodge the Giant Asian Hornet (Vespa mandarinia), which local villages have named the 'Yak Killer' for its deadly sting. A select team from the mission also had the thrill of observing the world's only fully habituated troop of golden monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana), which is the region's largest living primate and the country's No. 2 flagship species after the giant panda. The full results from the expedition will be shared with numerous entities, such as the Chinese government, environmental organizations and scientists to develop conservation strategies to protect the unique species of the region. During the two-month expedition, the team explored six different sites in the Mountains of Southwest China and Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspots. The biodiversity hotspots are 34 regions worldwide where 75 percent of the planet's most-threatened mammals, birds, and amphibians survive within habitat covering just 2.3 percent of the Earth's surface (roughly equivalent to the combined areas of the five largest U.S. states). Fully 50 percent of the Earth's vascular plants and 42 percent of terrestrial vertebrates exist only in these 34 hotspots. Hotspots face extreme threats and have already lost at least 70 percent of their original vegetation. "Being part of the Mission Himalayas team has given us all a renewed sense of hope for conservation efforts in this region of the world," said expedition scientific team member Dr. Anne Savage, senior conservation biologist at Disney's Animal Kingdom. "Having seen how the sacred lands project has integrated cultural needs and conservation priorities, resulting in the discovery of new species, and having the opportunity to see how golden monkeys--which were severely threatened by poaching and habitat destruction--are now thriving, it is clear that local communities, conservation organizations, and governmental agencies can work together to effect change and insure the survival of species and habitat. The yeti isn't the only one who can protect the forest--we all can!" The Mountains of Southwest China and Nepal are home to Tibetan Buddhists, whose cultural values encourage the protection of living beings--and therefore, of the natural world. Killing of life, especially in an unsustainable fashion, is in direct opposition to Buddhist teaching and Tibetan cultural values. The legend of the yeti, which posits the creature as a defender and inhabitant of only the most pristine lands, contributes to this practice. Yet even in this area filled with rich biodiversity and the strong influence of Tibetan culture, the Himalayas face great challenges from rapid social and economic development. In the Mountains of Southwest China, a growing population of immigrants from other parts of the country is shifting the balance of Tibetan influence. Road construction, which is causing habitat loss, also is bringing more tourists to the area, which in turn has created a market for wildlife products. Joining CI, Disney, and Discovery were a number of local partners including the Sichuan Academy of Forestry, Chengdu Institute of Biology, Sichuan Regional Forestry Department, and The Mountain Institute in Nepal. Funding for the expedition was generously provided by Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund (DWCF) and the Walt Disney Company. The Mission Himalayas expedition builds upon a decade-long relationship between CI and Disney to support biodiversity conservation. During that time, DWCF and the Walt Disney Company Foundation have contributed to several CI initiatives including a Global Amphibian Assessment, the protection of Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains, and a conservation project in Botswana. Additionally, Russell A. Mittermeier, Ph.D., president of CI, is a member of Disney's Animal Kingdom Advisory Board. CI's contributions to Disney's Animal Kingdom have been fundamental to the values of the park, and continue with Expedition Everest. Expedition Everest, the attraction, is a high-speed runaway train adventure that combines coaster-based thrills with the folklore of the yeti. Guests depart from a Himalayan village and venture nearly 200 feet upward to the snowy heights of the vast Asian peaks. Yet a run-in with the yeti--the guardian of the mountain--sends travelers on a forward and backward hair-raising escape. The spirit of the attraction and the spirit of the Mission Himalayas expedition are bound in a shared respect for the value of the ancient traditions that have preserved these areas for millennia. Finding Nemo to Make Splash In Musical Spectacular at Disney's Animal Kingdom The undersea world that charmed audiences around the world in the Disney presentation of the Pixar Animation Studios smash-hit film 'Finding Nemo' will come to life in an all-new musical stage show debuting at Disney's Animal Kingdom in late 2006. Featuring original songs by Tony Award-winning 'Avenue Q' composer Robert Lopez and a cappella musical 'Along the Way' composer Kristen Anderson-Lopez, 'Finding Nemo -- The Musical' will immerse Walt Disney World guests in the story of Marlin and Nemo, an overprotective clownfish father and his curious son, through a dazzling production that combines puppets, dancers, acrobats and animated backdrops. The show represents the first time Disney has taken a non-musical animated feature and transformed it into an original musical production. It will be presented in the newly enclosed Theater in the Wild. 'In 'Finding Nemo,' directors Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich and the talented team at Pixar created a film filled with unforgettable characters and a story rich with honest emotions that resonated with audiences everywhere,' said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. The movie was a worldwide box-office success and an Academy Award winner. 'We are truly excited to bring this beloved story to life at Disney's Animal Kingdom in this new musical spectacular.' During 'Finding Nemo -- The Musical,' Theater in the Wild will become a magical undersea environment through innovative lighting, sound, special effects and the theatrical puppetry of Michael Curry, who designed the richly detailed character puppets seen in the Broadway version of Disney's 'The Lion King.' Principal characters such as Marlin, Nemo and Dory will be represented by live performers operating larger-than-life puppets. Peripheral characters will be realized by a diverse array of puppetry styles, including rod, bunraku and shadow. 'It is our goal to bring the undersea 'Nemo' characters to Disney?s Animal Kingdom in a live setting in a way that captures what is truly special about the film,' Rasulo continued. 'This production will meet that challenge in a dynamic and wholly original way to bring us into the fantastical ocean world.' The director for the new show, Peter Brosius, is artistic director of The Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis, winner of the 2003 Regional Theatre Tony Award. The Broadway 'A Year With Frog and Toad,' nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award, originated at Children's Theatre Company. 'Finding Nemo -- The Musical' is the first major musical produced for Walt Disney World Resort by Disney Creative Entertainment, which has received acclaim for its productions around the world, including 'Disney's Aladdin' (at Disneyland Resort in California), 'The Lion King' (at Hong Kong Disneyland), 'Twice Charmed' (on the Disney Cruise Line), and 'The Golden Mickeys' (at Hong Kong Disneyland and on the Disney Cruise Line). 'It?s exciting to be involved in projects that introduce a new generation of future theatergoers to the work of internationally recognized creative talent through Broadway-caliber short-form shows that all audiences can appreciate,' said Anne Hamburger, executive vice president of Disney Creative Entertainment. ?Millions of children experience live theater for the first time during a visit to a Disney park.' 'Finding Nemo -- The Musical' tells the story of a father clownfish, Marlin, and his son, Nemo, each on a separate journey that ultimately teaches them how to love and understand each other. The two have been separated - and Marlin will stop at nothing to get his son back, facing undersea challenges with his new friend Dory, who he has met along the way. Meanwhile, Nemo, relocated to a fish tank in Sydney, makes new friends who teach him that he's stronger than he thinks. When news of his father's heroic journey reaches the tank, Nemo is inspired to do whatever is necessary to escape the tank and see his father again. 'Finding Nemo -- The Musical' will be performed several times daily. Admission to Theater in the Wild is included with regular Disney?s Animal Kingdom theme park admission.
